Woods Walk With The Old BK7

I'm still trying to learn what this is.

---added as a comparison. Whaddya think?

Hey mistwalker, I don't normally try to ID plants out of my area, but since you're not having any luck.......

Is it a vine, and are the leaves alternate or opposite? I'm guessing they're opposite (and compound).

Yep, it's a vine. I can't remember leaf location at the moment (ADHD 5 yr old in my ear ready to leave) but I have more pictures I'll post when I get back.

Great pics! I'd love to go packing through your neck of the woods...looks beautiful!

Looks the same to me too Doc, what is that?

As for my pics...

This is that same plant, pictures taken that same day.

That same plant taken a few days before.

This is another plant in another location a few miles up river.

These pics were taken back on Sept. 19th

These are pics of that same plant taken earlier today. It was raining so these pics were taken with a different camera.

When I found the second plant a few days ago I thought it was the same kind of plant. They are both vines, with opposing leaves that appear the same but the second plant has no pods on it. The first plant had the pods over two months ago and still has them now so I am not sure what's up there. I am wondering if they are different plants or if one was pollinated and the other was not.

Mistwalker, I think you have 2 different types of vine there. The one with the pods might be one of the Swallow-worts, possibly Black Swallow-wort (aka dog-strangling-vine, genus - Cynanthum or Vincetoxicum).

The one with the wispy seeds looks like Sweet Autumn Virgin's Bower (Clematis terniflora) (after it has gone to seed)

I've never seen either of these vines here, but I think it fits. If you do a search on Clematis terniflora, most of the pictures show the plant in flower. Your pictures show it after the flowers have gone.

The first time you posted the pictures, I thought of Clematis but because it's not in my area............ (some Clematis are, but not this one),

I think you'll have to get an in-depth description of the leaves, etc. and go back and try to match them up.

Compare them to your picture:

Doc

those look spot on :)

the one with the pod very much looks like "[black] swallow wort" to me, we have it all over here, it's an invasive and much hated by gardening people.

Thanks Doc, I'll go get some more pics of leaves (close-ups) and stuff from both plants and look them up.

We don't have a lot of it here, I only run across it now and then. The fibers in the pods make a good flash tinder.

NICE ! I am very envious. Living in the city really limits my time in the outdoors...

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed the post. Actually I spend a good bit of time along the river studying the plant life in the urban area too, and I enjoy those walks as well. I spent some time down at Renaissance Park yesterday taking plant photos in the rain. In fact I do so much of this I really need to invest in a pocket-able Becker...really liking the looks of the BK14 lately.

I really enjoy the urban parts of my studies as well. I think Lisa does too because I'll end up stopping by and talking to our friend Haley and drinking a cup of coffee to warm up while she makes Lisa's favorite pizza :) . She is nearly finished with her school here and will soon be heading out of town for a few years to finish up. I'm really going to miss her and her pizza when she's gone.

Thanks for the pics Mist, great looking area there. And thanks for the discussion between you and Doc, got to learn about an interesting looking plant. (And that is some mighty fine looking pizza as well!)

:D:thumbup: I love you Mist . . . & I just finished a steak hoagie & steak fries with Sally before I opened this post up . . .:)
Great shots again, thanks for letting us tag along. Looks like a nice place to spend a few hours for some T/M & green tea . . .
Be safe.

Thanks Derek, glad you enjoyed the post. Seems I am constantly studying plants these days. After many years of just taking so many of them for granted it finally occurred to me there was so much more I wanted to learn about them. A digital camera and a post on the internet got that started a few years ago and I just keep getting more fascinated by the subject.

Yep, I've been telling her for two years that I'm not looking forward to her transfer when it comes time. Not sure which I'll miss more her or the pizza. Probably Haley as there are other pizza joints around but in forty plus years I've never another girl like her. I gave her one of my Izulas a couple of months ago, I think I'm gonna get her a BK14 with scales as a going away present.

Thanks man, glad you had at least eaten this time :D

I usually get coffee there to warm up or their great drought root beer to go with my pizza but they do have a good tea selection.

There will be several hikes there over the winter and spring as I have spotted several plants I am studying, so you guys will get to tag along on more hikes through the area
