Spring is finally here, and I had to chance to get out for a while and check things out the other day. I thought I'd share a few pics.
Nice blue sky with just a few clouds
Traveling light
The canopy hasn't started developing yet, so lots of light reaching the ground
Various fungi and vegetation going on, glad to see the onions getting greener again.
A lot of wildlife in the area. It's funny with deer season being over, they aren't as jumpy, but with turkey season coming on, they are pretty skittish...
I got into sort of a staring contest with a western fence lizard.
Some remains from a deer who wasn't skittish enough at some point...
The insect life is back as well...
The snack for the day was some sharp cheddar and some salted pork kept cold in the water bottle carrier, and some crusty bread to go with it.
That knife is one made by Allen Surls of WAS Knives. It's his Kestrel model, and his take on a Bird & Trout knife, but I like it as a light duty, pointy knife for woods wandering. Allen does very nice work and I really like this little knife a lot.
It does really well with tinder prep.
But that wasn't really necessary on this trip. This time I just did it the old fashioned way with leaves, twigs, and a lighter
The thin hollow-ground blade slices very well.
The other knife I had with me was a BRK&T Bravo-1 in CPM 3V. It's a stouter blade, better for the heavy lifting, and was the one I cut the forked stick with. They are two very different knives, and I think they compliment each other well.
Then soon the sun was headed to the horizon, and it was time to head out.
