Spring is finally here, and I had to chance to get out for a while and check things out the other day. I thought I'd share a few pics.

Nice blue sky with just a few clouds

Traveling light

The canopy hasn't started developing yet, so lots of light reaching the ground

SP-3.jpg

Various fungi and vegetation going on, glad to see the onions getting greener again.

A lot of wildlife in the area. It's funny with deer season being over, they aren't as jumpy, but with turkey season coming on, they are pretty skittish...

I got into sort of a staring contest with a western fence lizard.

SP-46.jpg

Some remains from a deer who wasn't skittish enough at some point...

SP-44.jpg

The insect life is back as well...

The snack for the day was some sharp cheddar and some salted pork kept cold in the water bottle carrier, and some crusty bread to go with it.

That knife is one made by Allen Surls of WAS Knives. It's his Kestrel model, and his take on a Bird & Trout knife, but I like it as a light duty, pointy knife for woods wandering. Allen does very nice work and I really like this little knife a lot.

It does really well with tinder prep.

But that wasn't really necessary on this trip. This time I just did it the old fashioned way with leaves, twigs, and a lighter :)

The thin hollow-ground blade slices very well.

The other knife I had with me was a BRK&T Bravo-1 in CPM 3V. It's a stouter blade, better for the heavy lifting, and was the one I cut the forked stick with. They are two very different knives, and I think they compliment each other well.

Then soon the sun was headed to the horizon, and it was time to head out.

Great pics! And a great pair of knives, too.

Nothin' like squeeler cooked slow over a fire...

Thanks for bringing us along! Great pics as per usual. How are you liking your bravo? Brkt's use of 3v has me addicted to the stuff.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I love pretty much any meat roasted over open flames :)

I am really liking the Bravo a lot really. I have sort of developed an addiction of my own I suppose, to Bravos and 3V. I picked up a Bravo 1.25 3V in the exchange a while back, and liked it a lot, but wanted something a little smaller...so I picked this one up online. Then I picked up a Bravo Necker 2 3V a few days ago. The 1.25 is a rampless one, and I like the ramp so I may trade it or sell it to fund a Bravo 1 LT and try that also.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

Good call on the Bravo 1. As much as I hate to say it, whenever I look at a new knife for heavier work I end up asking myself, "will it do anything the Bravo won't do?". Needles to say, I haven't bought a new fixed blade in a long time :p.

I like the Bravo a lot. Great stout blade, great ergos too. I just like to also have something very pointy along :)

Great pictures, as always, Mistwalker. I, too, really like the Bravo-1 - I have 2 of them. I'm kind of liking the Bravo 1.5 also, but have managed to restrain myself.............for the time being. :(

I picked up a Bravo 1 LT a while back and love it. Not missing the extra steel, either - this LT version feels just as capable and tough, in s slimmer/lighter package. I'm glad to see BR factoring the toughness of 3V into thinner blade versions of their tried and true designs. If you like the Bravos, I'd recommend checking one out.

Jealous of your beautiful day out. Always enjoy your reading your threads and seeing your photos, this one was no different. Thanks for sharing Bri, appreciate the effort.

Thanks Doc, glad you liked the post :) . I like it a lot as well, I have a rampless 1.25 with desert ironwood as well, but like size of the 1 better

I am looking at getting a LT, I am trying to decide between one available now, or putting in a preorder for one with a different handle color. I'd trade the 1.25 in 3V I have for the right LT if someone wanted to trade one, or even another ramped 1.

Great set of photos

What is that water bottle?

Thanks man, glad you liked them.

The bottle is an Exotac Ti 22 water bottle, I've had it for a few years. They don't sell them anymore.

Thanks Bill, I am glad you enjoy them man!

Curious on the water bottle as well. Nice spring outing!

Thanks man, it was nice out. I answered that question above :)

Thanks mist I really enjoyed that. I'm itching to get out. Not sure when the 4 month old baby will allow it :)

Great pics! That WAS blade is sweet. I have really moved to thin, lighter knives, and that one is nice.

Amazing photos as usual. Thanks for taking the time to do stuff like this. As someone said - it IS like bringing us along.

I am another that appreciates it!

Wow, thanks for sharing.
Looking through this post is a nice getaway from my desk job, and a great reminder of what I have waiting at home.
Its Friday, and I know what ill be doing for the weekend!

Thanks man! Lol, actually so have I and the Bravo is a part of that :) Allen does some beautiful work, this is one of his more simple models, but his fit and finish, as well as his grinds and symmetry are super. I like having something stout with me for harder work, and something light and pointy for more delicate or detailed work. I really like this little Kestrel a lot.

Keith makes those water bottles (I did some research) they can be found.

Ah cool. I really like this one, been carrying it for a couple of years now.

once again, you are living right.... :-)

Thanks man :)

Thanks man, I know I usually day dream about being out in the woods on the days I am stuck inside. I'm glad my posts offer at least a temporary escape and inspire getting out when the chance comes!

I really like the Allen Surls Kestrel knife. It looks more useful than most of the woods knives I end up buying. Nice early spring woods visit. Yes, things are starting to grow again. Saw my first tic about a week ago (ugh). As soon as I have time, hopefully after this cold snap scheduled for tonight and tomorrow, I'll take a run out looking for some of the early wild flowers like Dwarf Crested Iris.
