Woodsman / Bushfinger Comparison Question

Ok, I have been using my Woodsman in the kitchen a lot and some in the field now for the last 8 or 9 months. I love the knife very much, but edc-ing would get me in trouble. I have looked at LOTS of photos from LOTS of angles, and I am thinking that the Bushfinger is about as close as it gets to a smaller Woodsman in all around function...as in a somewhat similar point, guardless, and being able to get the entire edge onto a cutting board surface during food prep.

If any of you guys have both a Woodsman and a Bushfinger, could you post some side by side comparison photos please?

Thanks!

Mist, I'll get some shots for you but it probably won't be until tomorrow. Tied up today with Super Bowl parties and such. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

I've held off on getting my Woodsman dirty in the kitchen so far, but I can at least post some shots.

I use my Hunter in the kitchen the most so it might be another consideration. Mine isn't guardless but there's enough of a drop between the handle and blade to keep my knuckles outta the way and a nice high grind. Good slicer. It would be a great chef's knife guardless.

Mist, look into a Woodchuck. I have a guardless one that I use in the kitchen I love it. I'll try to post a kitchen pick after the game. Go Broncos!

Mist, don't u have the first bushfinger ever?

I did yes, but it was different, particularly the handle, than the new ones. It got traded to a friend for another Fiddleback a while back.

Very hard to think of you as Bushfingerless:eek:

It was something I actually struggled with for a while. I know having the first one was something to be proud of, but I use my knives in a lot of different photography work and after a while it bothered me that that one did not accurately represent the Bushfinger that Andy currently makes. So, it ended up in a box for a while and that was just sad to me...so I traded it away to a fellow Fiddleback fan who appreciates it very much, and who uses it, but is not prone to posting photos very often.

Is that what happens when you are careless while using a Bushfinger?

LOL

Thanks man, much appreciated. Oh, the Hunter works great as a food prep knife. I'm not looking to replace my Woodsman in the kitchen, I am looking for a belt carry Fiddleback with the most in common with the important (to me) features of the Woodsman. Pointy is important to me and I believe the Bushfinger is pointier than the Hunter. If not then that may steer me in the direction of a non-dagger-ground Shank...but even the name of that one suggests "stabby" which really isn't what I am going for...

Oh trust me, a guardless Woodchuck is already on the agenda for some future point for a food prep knife!

If pointy is your goal have you considered a kephart? I feel they are a little pointier than a Bushfinger, myself

Love the Kephart! Fantastic bushcrafting knife and my favorite bushcrafting knife to date. The point is perfect for me, but the guard and handle really don't work as well at the cutting board as I think a Bushfinger will, or as my old Bushfinger did...

Then the only other one I can think that could hold up as the woodsman that's not a Bushfinger would be the terrasaur. I've never held one in hand, but I hear the handle is pretty love/hate.

Here ya go; IMHO for edc I would do a bushfinger if a folder is not an option! Also in the kitchen its great. Mine is 1/8" and has great ergonomics, can be rocked on a cutting board (at an angle), and is plenty slicey!

- cheers

Thank you for that. After a lot of study, and then looking at these, I am convinced that the Bushfinger is the closest in the line up to a smaller Woodsman. Your photos are much appreciated!

Anyone have a picture of a gaucho?

I can't speak for you, or anyone else, but I can say I'm pretty sure that Andy will never make a Gaucho thick enough for me to be comfortable in the woods with. I'd love it if I could run across a tapered tang 3/16 Bushfinger with a nearly full height grind...but I am thinking I will just have to be happy with 5/32 :)

Hey Mist,

You probably already have what you need from wjt's great shots, but here are some more. Let me know if there are specific angles or info I can get you.

I'm not sure the Hunter helps you in the EDC role as it's not much smaller than the Woodsman.

If it's 4" pointy blade you're looking for, wouldn't your Kephart fit the bill? Or a guardless EDC?

Gonna say I think a guardless Kephart, if such a beast existed, might be close.

I love the guardless kephart (top...with bushfinger on bottom):

I went looking for guardless Kepharts and yours is the only one I've found. So I guess the beast exists, but is kinda rare, like Bigfoot.

btw, I love that Kephart. Great spalting and handle. And it's a scandi! So it's even more rare than Bigfoot ;)
