how does it look guys dont mind my welding I had no gas so it looks like a rat crapped everywhere :barf:

Well its making fire however im not sure if its jetted right i figure i will wait until I finish the forge itself, then play with it

but maybe someone experianced can tell me whether or not im on the right track

later on i will post a video of it in the dark

One thing i forgot to mention is i am using a low pressure regulator because its all i have and they dont sell the high pressure ones around here i would have to order it.

does anyone know what pressure the blue regulators run at?

Hey, not bad. I like the stainless or chrome blower tube, and the reg. looks adjustable to some degree. Adapt a gauge on the output and see what pressure you get all screwed in or order one. Your doin good Aye.

You will need to get it into the forge in order to really see how it will burn.

yeah its stainless for the tube I smacked it around a 2 inch pipe until it fit and sealed,
the stainless came with all of the tools i bought from a older guy

I welded the smaller end first and worked the larger one untill it was about the right size
first i drilled a bunch of holes in the mounting plate then once I welded it on I used tinsnips to cut out a oval

it doesnt seem like it needs much air, By that I mean I am not opening the gate valve very much, although my fan is running full out I am thinking I should install a dimmer switch

its quite possible i need to re-jet though then it should be able to take more air

but im not going to get ahead of myself here first its time to build the forge itself

well here she is!!!

Seems to work for me I made the small tool for a friend of mine who does masonry
the other is a belt for hooks

I used heavy firebrick which I found out wasnt the best choice, but it seems to work
I guess I gotta get my buddy to come over and mortar it all but but i will probley change the lay out a bit,

im happy as heck this i fun stuff i really have been edging to do now im there
these are the first things I have blacksmithed ever

im so happy right now its like a drug lol

I cant think of anything where I have made anything that was nearly so much fun,

the burner works best when forge is up to temp. then you can force as much air and fuel as you want.

yeah i noticed it was changing quite a bit as it warmed up so i had to turn the gas pressure down

this is all stuff im going to learn as i go along

tomorrow im making a knife or at least a bunch of junk lol

Well then I should start out making swords :)

Im sure I will find a way to screw everything up lol

its the only way to learn

Yeah this is way more fun then grinding
I need to get some tongs then I am set but for now channel locks will do

I tack weld a piece of rebar onto my steel and use the rebar for a handle. When I'm done forging the knife, I cut the rebar off and clean up on the grinder. Here's a photo.

o scott a real knifemaker would forge weld the rebar on :)

Scottie, Mother Here:D:D, A Real Knife maker would smelt the rebar iron then the steel bloom then forge weld it.
By the way Ickie, I called Scott Taylor, Scottie so you are in good company.

Just a little pointer - Vice grips are not a good idea for forging tongs. When the work piece slips out (and it will) they will pop it off in the worst possible direction. 1800F metal is not something you want flying around. You would be better off with a cheap pair of long handled pliers from HF.
Get or make some tongs soon.

Scott, What anvil do you have there? Looks just rite for knife making. Whats the width across the top?

I dunno chuck, I'm not a Real Knife Maker and I've done the bloom smelt thing:(

I think the standards for a Real Knife Maker are MUCH higher than that;)

BTW my magnetite is FINALLY here, hopefully my next smelt will be better than my last
