Can anyone reccomend a good source for inexexpensive, probably military surplus, wool blaknets/sweaters/pants? I know that Sportsmans Guide has them but I have found over the years that they really don't have very good prices on many things. THanks!

Most towns will have an army surplus store, and they sell all sorts of stuff like this. The trick is to know when they get a fresh shipment of stuff, which usually happens when troops get re-stationed, so if you know anyone in the forces, this could be your in. Otherwise, quite often you could buy surplus items directly from said person.

Majors surplus has some but they're not 100% wool... I think a box of 5 was like 50 bucks.

Check out your local thrift shop/Goodwill for wool pants and sweaters.Sometimes wool blankets that you can have made into out door clothing--KV

I bought a few of these Italian army surplus blankets a couple of weeks ago from cheaperthandirt.

They smell heavily of mothballs and take a couple days to air them out enough to tolerate being around them, but they are great blankets, and a steal for $12.

That looks good. For the real deal, I would deal with the smell.

Beware of the word "TYPE" in any low cost ads as you generally get what you pay for.

For example, real deal, Swiss Army blankets usually run $40-$50. Another place had Swiss Army 'type' (the type was in much smaller letters), for $12, but were not 100% wool and less than 1/2 the weight of the real blankets. Imitation blankets might work well in imitation cold, but for real cold, I want real wool.:D

Also, check out www.faribaultmills.com They are, at least one of the suppliers for the Army (got the name off the tag from a issue blanket back from AfGan), and for the entire Navy. Look under the Military collection in the blanket section. Not cheap, even the irregulars, but 100% real deal and 100% U.S. made.
