I do wonder Yvsa how you know you old knife is buffalo horn? ;)

Spiral the old knife is a reproduction and these types of knives were made in India. It is definitely buffalo horn.
One side isn't as badly striated as the other and appears more like buffalo horn does. It is also the green buffalo horn instead of the black. The green buffalo horn is more often seen on old knives from that part of the world.
Even the true Rodgers Knive's were handled with buffalo horn as well. The true Rodgers Knive's were very decent blades!

Is green the age or a different type Ysva?
A different type I believe John. I've seen some that is really nice and as smooth as the new black horn from HI. However most of the old stuff is in pretty bad shape. If it was me and if my knife was a Rodgers instead of a repro I would try some hooflex or the nursing lanolin on it to see if it would help restore it somewhat.

Hi Yvsa,
I though thr photo was clearer, perhaps it isnt. Guess I can handle the handle!

I have old striated dried up buffalo horn & I have Green horn as well.

This horn appers to be entirly made uo fron 1000 of tubes or wires stuck together. looks like hunders ot thin porcupine quills.

O well who knows but cheers for the idea.

cheers,
Spiral

If it looks like a bunch of hairs or porcupine quills stuck together, it could be Rhino. Mention that in the EEWRS, a number of guys there are familiar with Rhino. Im not familiar enough with such things to really be of much help. But, most of the old horn Ive seen, usually takes a greyer sheen/texture. Iffen its buffalo horn, its either real new, or very very very well taken care of.

I've been thinking of making a handle for it.Originally was thinking of making a bone handle since a lot of these blades i have seen have a bone or ivory/horn handle.
But i dont think I have the knowhow to handle bone so Ive decided on a teak wood handle.
Thats a fine looking knife you have there! :)
Yaj.

Spiral I'm not saying it is buffalo, or that it is rhino, just that it could be one or the other. If I could see it in person I would have a better idea which of the two it may be. I just didn't want you to get your hope up and then have them dashed.

Identifying an unknown material of any kind is sort of like identifying a bird. You can't just take one look at a distance and completely with assurance declare that it is a Baltimore Oriole when it could have been the sunlight reflecting off a Robin in just the right light like an aquaintance of mine once did.
Had the bird in question been up close and in good lighting where there was no question of its identity then it would have been no doubt.
I try to never be absolutely certain that an item is or may be what I think/hope/pray that it is until I have it verified by an expert that can make an assured judgement.
It might behoove you to do the same.;)

OK, enough.

Spiral?

It is Persian design, with rare thousand-quilled yak horn, folded steel, made by Adsiz in 1896 in the village of Harran, Turkey, two years before his death.
His wife sold it when she moved from their home to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

It is very handsome. You did well.

Spiral (& yaj) -

The 'English' slang word _choora_ is indeed most likely from Gypsy (=Romani) language (which is related ultimately to Hindi/Urdu, Sanskrit, etc. as the Gypsies came out of India).

Hi,
First off sorry to evryone for my poor attitude, ever since I etched that blade Ive had a splitting headache & been a bear with a sore head. Rude & ignorant to.

Does lime juice & steel fumes cause brain damage? feels like it.

& For all I know Yvsa ,Danny it could be buffalo! :footinmou

But Kimet I know your wrong as I have just deduced 100% certainly that it is a rare recurved shakawasa kukri was made of imported Tibetan steel in Nepal by kami Bishjopwalla at Pomikl village, {3rd house on left} under the shade of a honey tree, on the southern slopes of ganjaacres mountain, on a cool & breezy day of great auspisciousness!

So There!

Spiral
