What are some of your favorite quotes that you feel are serious words to live by. Two of my favorites are:
"That which does not kill us, only makes us stronger."

"We do not inherate the land from our parents, we borrow it from our children.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

"..it is foolishness and endless trouble to cast a
stone at every dog that barks at you.."

"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweet taste of low price is gone."

"To earn a million is easy, a real friend is not."

I'd say pretty much the entire Havamal.

If I had to pick a couple lines from it;

"Generous and brave men get the best out of life; they seldom bring harassments on themselves. But a coward fears everything, and a miser groans at a gift"

"There is no better load a man can carry than much commonsense; no worse than too much drink."

"A man should not be grudging of the money he makes. Often what we intend for those we love is laid up for those we dislike. Matters frequently turn out worse than we expect."

"Before proceeding up the hall, study all the doorways. You never know when an enemy will be present."

My general purpose motto is the ever popular;

"Die with your boots on"

Words to live by James!

Beware of the darkness, be kind to your children, remember the woman who waits...

Beware of strange faces in dark dingy places, becareful while bending the law...

Be calm in the face of all common disgraces,
and know what they're doing it for.

All of the above from Gordon Lightfoot's "The House You Live In."

I've found a lot of wisdom in his music.

There seems to an amazing connection between what people do and what happens to them.

This is a good thread with no knives in it, so "Community" is a good place for it, and that's where I'm moving it to.

From Rabbi Hillel:

If I am not for myself, who will be for me?

If I am only for myself, what am I?

And if not now, when?

And sage advice from another of the sages of the Talmud:

Shemaia said: Love labor, hate domination, and do not make yourself known to the ruling powers.

And some wise guy said,

The pen is mightier than the sword, but not in the dark.
