So, I have only recently switched from carrying exclusively fixed blade knives and only have 2 good folders. I have a Benchmade AFO 2:

and a mini griptillian with M4 steel:

Come payday, I am going to order a new knife but don't know which one yet. The AFO has been my main edc knife and the mini grip has only really seen use in situations where the big automatic would be out of place. I would like to know what you guys think I should add to my rotation. I have been working in a lumber yard so the only real work knife I use at work is a straight razor. I am moving to a party rental type job. Where I haul out the big bouncy houses and things of that nature and want a knife dedicated to my new job since I can't carry the AFO because everything I will do is setting up for an event. I'm looking for a gentleman's folder style knife that won't cause any problems at work that is also a viable option to include in my edc rotation

I recommend the Spyderco delica, small enough to not be scary, capable and comfortable enough to carry and use everyday at work. It's also inexpensive and light weight. It has been one of my favorite work knives for years.

I think a SAK would be invaluable in a party rental/setup type environment. Very sheeple friendly too. That with your M4 mini Grip will cover all you need and more.

But...if you're really itching for a new knife, and you seem to like Benchmade, check out a 940 or 698.

Spyderco Native 5. I don't own one, but I was very impressed after handling one. Definitely inexpensive for s35vn, and very lightweight. Also very ergonomic with a finger choil. Lockback for a non-threatening user. s110v option as well.

The Delica is one of the ones I'm looking at, but Benchmade's Valet with a plain edge looks like a nice "sheeple friendly" knife that can handle anything I could throw at it

The valet is nice, but not what I would consider a work knife, it isn't as comfortable to use or as willing to get dirty as the delica is, it's also substantially more expensive.
I say get a delica for work and the valet for those nice weekends off.

I found myself in the situation of wanting a "classy" cutting tool that was capable of working, but also capable of passing unnoticed in social situations where I might meet gentle folks who were not accustomed to sharp objects.

I looked at all sorts of modern and traditional folders, but finally came to the Leatherman Skeletool CX.

The CX has a touch of carbon fiber for that "classy" look. It's small enough to stow in your pocket, but feels solid and capable.

I know it's not a "knife" per se, but the answer you're looking for may also be a multitool. You get options right there at your fingertips, and multitools are less offensive to "Those Parents".....

You have a point. I might have my bar set a little bit too high wanting a knife that can be carried in more sensitive situations that can also do everything else I expect my other knives to do. That skeletool looks nice

Good idea. I hadn't even considered a SAK. I'll look into them. Do you have any idea which one would work best for my needs?

Really it's hard to pass on a SAK or other smaller multitool when you know you might deal with those kinds of people. The multitool doesn't get the same scrutiny as a "real knife". I recently had a grown man who has known me for 7 years, knows my respect for blades as tools, and that I am not the type of person he would ever have to worry about... He "expressed concern" that I was weilding a dangerous weapon and might "scare the other employees". Yup, the ladies in accounting loved my beautiful "weapon" but he was the one bothered. So I will be getting a Stockman or Sodbuster type so he doesn't have to fear for his safety anymore. They said they would not prohibit any blade, but request I tone it down because of the one guy. My boss liked my knife tho so it's more just irritating to have to worry about it at all.

Out of everything suggested, I would take the M4 mini grip.

Just get some aftermarket scales, a deep carry clip and call it a day.
The steel will outperform most others out there shy of spending a few hundred dollars, or looking for spyderco sprints (manix 2 cruwear, or millie 52100) but even those would be situational.

What scales/retailer would you recommend for it?

I've retyped three times now. Get a case mini cooper lock. Remember most kids only see knives in zombie video games which are black fixed blades and associate them with that. They'll associate stag with camping hunting etc and anything that opens fast is a switchblade to them so keep it simple. Stag style handled anything and leatherman rev. Trust me the stag and a sak get the same reaction but the rev is more useful than Swiss Army knife but lack on good blade. Maybe even carve a stick some if a kid asks and let him hold it. Most will think it's cool. Now if I personally knew you I could give you different suggestions but I give suggestion like this for sheeple friendly because I don't know you. How you carry yourself plays a big role in it

My biggest pet peeve is when people confuse my knives as anything other than a simple cutting tool and not a weapon. Even if they're too young to really understand it, it annoys me to no end

Indeed. Mine was labeled as a dangerous weapon because it has a functional flipper. It's a switchblade. I must be just waiting to stab somebody. I totally wasn't going to cut that banding off of a pallet of building supplies. Nope. This 3" flipper is only for human flesh. Lol. People make me laugh, but also make me sad and angry at the same time.

Spyderco delica. Ontario rat 2. A traditional slip joint knife. or grab an emerson commander and scare the crap out of everyone. It would probably be less people than you think.

Get a delica or a dragonfly 2. The dragonfly is capable of most tasks even though it's small, a delica is as good or better than either of the folder you have now IMHO
