Work/edc knife dillema

A Delica is not much smaller than a mini-grip but then it's a lot less expensive too in case you lose it. A multitool is a good choice if you actually will use the tools.

You have a point. I'm looking at a Delica from blade hq. VG-10 and frn scales. $65.97 which is a lot less that the $145 I paid for my M4 mini grip

Leather man wingman. You can get them for about $30 at Home Depot and having scissors is very useful

My biggest pet peeve is when people confuse my knives as anything other than a simple cutting tool and not a weapon. Even if they're too young to really understand it, it annoys me to no end

I've helped friend do party rentals often and used a spring assisted Kershaw just fine but I don't recommend it unless i know the person personally I'd use a fixed blade if I could legally conceal them here but I can't conceal so it's too easy for some kid to "borrow" it out of the sheath.

Yup, for a job like this, one of those utility blade knives with the replaceable and dispensable blades will turn you into a machine. Ones like the Gerber EAB utility knife, Dewalt retractable folding blade, Stanley retractable folding blade or Vermont retractable utility blade. All folders, retractable with replaceable blades.

I carried a fixed blade exclusively for about 5 years. I always kept the sheath clipped closed, though. It's impossible to take it out without me noticing and having time to react

I second the Leatherman Wingman, for a multi tool the weight really isn't bad, and it has a blade that can be opened with one hand which is convenient. That being said, a SAK is always a good choice around knife sensitive people.

If there's sensitive people around I'll always suggesta a SAK/Multitool first, as a single blade knife might seem too threatening to some sheeple

In that route, I'd take the Wingman, Skeletool or Wave for OHO blades and quick access, or any SAK like the Bantam, Cadet, Soldier, Tinker, Spartan, Explorer, etc., which will igve you additional utility

A folder + multitool/SAK is a great combo, for most people's needs and everyday tasks

My toughest folders also happen to be my most people friendly - The Opinel #9 and #10 Inox.

The 10 is a beast of a knife but in all honesty, the 9 is capable of doing just about anything you want from a folder. The 10 is best carried in the rear pocket. The 9 can be carried in the front or rear pocket. But the Opinel is not for everybody and lots of people will hate it.

The joint requires some care to prevent it from siezing up with moisture. I melt Johnson Paste Wax into the joint with a heat gun and that works well.

The knife can be opened or closed one handed but opening requires some practice. Took me about a year to get to a point where I can do it in my sleep. It's the safest knife to close that I own.

The blade locks but the lock shouldn't be trusted to keep the knife open under hard closing forces. If this is an expectation that you have for a work knife, you might want to change your usage or move to a fixed blade.

If a knife just isn't a knife unless it opens with a "clack", the Case Trapper Lock is a good choice. Another in a similar vein is the Buck 500.

I'm pretty sure Adam from myth busters carries a lestherman wave. When someone asks tell them it's the same kind of knife that Adam from myth busters carried

For a single blade knife, something more traditional like a case trapper or even a buck 110 or 112 would be a good choice. A SAk Pioneer X would be a good choice as well. For a multitool I like the leatherman juice s2 on the smaller side, or the wingman for one that is a little larger.

A bright red SAK (Tinker for choice) would be social-friendly as well as useful on the job thanks to its tools. Comes with a key-ring "ear" to which you can attach a short lanyard to for pocket extraction. (Leatherman has similarly useful models.)

Again, on the social-friendly scale, I recommend always using two hands to open a knife of any type. And except around job sites and other places where everyone has OHO knives, flicking a knife open in general society tells those who see you (thanks Hollywood and TV!) that you're a criminal psychopath. The strength of this cultural conditioning is awesome, and quite impervious to facts.

+1 couldn't have said it better, and yes, those SAKs are excellent when carried with a lanyard/bead/clip/dangler, I do it to all of them.

Nice. I just put in an order for a Victorinox Super Tinker. $5 more than the regular Tinker with more tools on it. I also have a Delica coming in because losing that mini grip would be worse than losing a Delica

There was a nice looking g10 delica on the exchange earlier. Not sure if it is still unclaimed.

Nice choices.

The valet is nice, but not what I would consider a work knife, it isn't as comfortable to use or as willing to get dirty as the delica is, it's also substantially more expensive.
I say get a delica for work and the valet for those nice weekends off.

I'd say that was very well put, I use and own both, the Delica is a big little knife. and the Valet is a dressier knife.

I've already ordered my knives. I went for the Delica with a Super Tinker to go with it. I don't know what it was, but I felt compelled to get a full sized Griptillian in M4 with all black everything

The delica is pretty colorful and won't scare those sheeples, it's steel holds an edge quite well and it's cutting geometry is fantastic. The cold steel Cold 4 could also be considered as the look of it leans more toward the gentleman knife category. Another fantastic gentleman knife would be a Spyderco Gayle Bradly 2. Hope this helps!
