AA mini-mag dont work no more (4 yrs). can you guys reccomend a tough, simple, no bullshit, in the $40-50 range flashlite? will be belt carried. thanks . paul

Fenix L2T V2 Q2. Similar size to the AA mini mag you are used to. This is a simple 2 mode output light with the light level selected by tightening/loosening the head. Switches on/off via button on tailcap. Very simple to operate.

On low level, the light output is similar to your mag on fresh batteries. High mode will blow you away if you are not used to current 'bright' flashlights. $49.50 from 4sevens.com.

Side cutter: If I had of received 4 years of service from a $10 light, I would be overjoyed. I don't know if you are aware of it, but mini mags are now available with LED, or even at Wall Mart, you can get a easily installed coversion set up for about $6, which still makes for a very reasonably priced unit. I personally would elect for several of these, rather than one more expensive light which will hurt if it is lost or stolen. The LED version has tremendous battery life, plus is very bright also.
Just one person's opinion Merry Christmas

Very good choice for the light. Will work really well. I have used the L2D for awhile as a general purpose light, and it's really good. The L2T has only the two most useful modes, and is a great light.

For someone who's used a minimag, either of these lights will be a big surprise.

If you want something that's a little more robust, in case you're going to be dropping your light a lot, or otherwise abusing it, in the course of your job, you can get the Fenix TK20 at 4sevens.com. It even comes with a yellow rubber grip.

Either way, David (owner of 4sevens.com) is a great guy, and has excellent customer service, including a lifetime warranty for his products (directly, not through the manufacturer). You can also use the "CPF8" coupon at checkout to get 8% off.

P.S. As with all high output lights, alkaline batteries will provide very poor runtime, so I would recommend purchasing some NiMH rechargeables. I highly recommend Sanyo Eneloop brand batteries, as they are low-self-discharge (lose ~15% per year at 70F, compared to about the same % per week for regular NiMH... not to mention that they can be recharged >500X). A charger with 4 AA can be had for ~$20 online. However, if you're anything like me, then after you use them, you'll want to replace all your alkaline batteries with Eneloop... so consider that Costco has a pack with 8xAA, 2xAAA, and 4xC adapters and 4xD adapters that allow you to use AA batteries in devices made for C and D cells.

The other nice thing is that the L2T should fit snugly in the MiniMag holsters. I know it fits the nylon ones perfectly.

(oh yeah, I recommend the Fenix L2T also)

hey shooter, i.ve hasd the LED in the mini-mag for 2-3 yrs. works great, but for some reason it likes to turn itself on.????????? and i want a 1 hand pushbutton lite. you're right on the $10 worth of course. its just time to "upgrade". glad that MAG-LITE has set such a high standard. paul

I'll also recommend the Fenix L2D. I gave mine to a friends, but i was running it on rechargeable NIMH AA's.

I would recommend the Surefire G2. I have a G2 and a 6P(same as G2, but is aluminum instead of Nitrolon). They have served me well. :)
The problem with the Surefires is that they don't run on rechargeable batteries, and that means they get very expensive very quickly. Plus, (with the exception of the Aviator), the incandescent lights not regulated and dim rather quickly.

I love Surefires as much as anybody, but in the OP's price range, Fenix makes more sense.

If you use it everyday(like a security guard, for example), yes the batteries can get expensive. That's when a rechargeable kit comes into its own. You can upgrade to a rechargeable kit for the G2 or 6P, although it makes the flashlight longer in length. I have the rechargeable kit myself, and I like it.

Or just get a rechargeable to begin with.

As an emergency backup, Surefires are priceless.

But yes, the Fenix sounds more practical for sidecutter.:)

You might like this one --twin beams and hard plastic. A real work horse.

But still relatively poor heatsinking, and dubious water-resistance.

Fenix, Olight, or Nitecore. Can't really go wrong with any of them, Fenix's are mostly utilitarian, Nitecore is more "tactical" and Olight is like fenix, but IMHO a bit more intuative.

Take a look at the Task Force 3 Watt LED. I got it for $20 at Lowes and it is amazing. Uses 2 C-cells and puts out enough light to light up the whole street. Comes with a belt holster and uses common batteries, no $1+ a pop CR123.

I switched from a Surefire 6P to a Fenix TK10 and am very happy with it.
About the batteries..... I figure if a dozen CR123's cost $20 and they last me a year - it's worth it.
