Just wanted to post one of my works in progress. I am trying to make a drop point hunter. Just did the tapering of the tang. I tried it on my disk grinder and it fell in the gap between the tool rest and the disk:( Scared the bejeezus out of me. I think I might have even screamed like a little girl.:D Anyways its still a little ruff. I am going to hand sand it with 220 before I get it HTed. hows it looking so far. It was going to be about 1/8 of an inch longer but I messed up the rear of the tang. Please let me know what you guys think. I know the pics are bad but...

Glad you and the blade and your equipment are alright. Whatever happened...don't do it again! Guess the thong hole will end up a little closer to the end than you had planned. Looks like you're making progress. The tapered thinning of the tang seems pretty good. I don't understand the notch?

Looks good, Are you using all four of the holes?

Phil, I shouldn't answer for him, but the guard locks into the notch.

It is a notch for the guard, an I will only be using 2 holes for the corby pins and one for the lanyard hole. Thanks.

Looks good.

It's funny how a knife design changes with every little 'woops', aint it? :)

Nice job on the tapered tang, panchO! I've tried casually reading one or two tutorials on how to do that, and they didn't really make any sense to me. Is this your first try?

Yes it's my first time. It didn't go very smoothly but in the end it came out ok. I tried to follow the instructions from a book. "How to Make Knives by, R.Barney and R. Loveless" Seeing somebody in person or a dvd would have probably been more helpful.

looks good to me Panch0, I can't wait to see the next stage. Nice work on the tapering.

PanchO, rent (smartflix) or buy (CenterCross Instructional) the Steve Johnson "Subhilt Fighter" video for a great demonstration of Loveless-style techniques.

Looks excellent for a first try! I learn best by watching, so I could use some good DVDs, or better yet, watching someone in person who knows what they are doing.

Looks real good. I've tapered a few tangs and put off trying it for a while, once I did it I realized it was alot easier than I had expected. I don't do the hollow grinding out before hand, I just go to the grinder.
