well i forgot my fiances dad for christmas and i feel bad for not getting him anything he works for cox communications doing as a comunication something he basicly fixes all the major problems not the home things and he his always saying how he needs a good knife for work but they wont let him have a fixed blade so anyone have any recomendations on a good folder?

well it depends on your budget and how long the blade can be. i would recommend the spyderco paramilitary. i find it to fill my hands and it takes a great edge. though i dont see how this pertains to RAT cutlery. merry christmas.

Like Gundude said, not sure this belongs in the RAT forum....but whatever:

First off, why won't they let him have a fixed blade? If it's a size issue, the Izula would work perfectly.... But if it has to be a folder, then you need to figure out exactly what he's going to be doing with it and get something that matches his needs. Personally, I have found the Benchmade Griptillian 551 to do everything I ask of it and more. I also like the Randall Model 1 folder. It's cheap, holds an edge, and is a great all around knife.

There are a ton of different options to consider with a folder, serrations or not (or 1/2)? How much heavy duty work will it see? AO or manual? Pocket carry, belt carry, clip or no clip? There's just a bunch of stuff to figure out before recommendations can be made. But I would def. say look at both the BM 551 and the Randall Model 1, they're good starter knives in my opinion, they are very well rounded knives in my opinion.

sorry if this does not belong here everone here has always helpped me so much and im on a slight time limit but sorry everyone

I don't think people were jumping on you, it's just that Jeff has said that he would like topics in this forum to be pretty much RAT-centered. But if the mods don't think it belongs here they will move it.

yeah i just need to pay more attention lol sorry again everyone

Actually Jeff has said numerous times that anything knife, survival, or outdoor is exactly what belongs on this forum.....I am sure Jeff will be the first to talk about other companys knives.....We as the RAT community are here for these types of questions.....now for the question....I would go with a rat 1 by ontario...rat design and affordable....

No worries man, happens to all of us from time to time.

Back on topic, what type of work do you see the knife being used for? Are we talking opening packages and mail, or stripping wire, being used as a screwdriver in a pinch, ect? That will affect what type of folder is best for him.

Well, then it's my mistake, I misunderstood something he had mentioned in another thread. My apologies.

mostly stripping wire sutting tube splicing cutting wire and killing snakes here and there when needed (i guess they end up in the box things he works on he lives in a desert so yeah lol) i think thats about it nothing more then an electrician would so i think

maybe the victorinox electrician? it is nice and affordable. and it wont scare as easily as other knives would

Then I would say look into the Randall Model 1, it'll do all that and more, and with a price tag around $30 or so. It's a great knife, that's for sure. And when the Izula folder comes out he should look into that too, I'd be willing to bet that it'll be able to take a beating and keep coming as well.

I agree with De4thStr1ke - there are a lot of options and a number of considerations that may inform which knife to go with. I also agree that the Benchmade Griptillian 551 and the Sypderco Paramilitary are great folders. You may also want to take a look at the Spyderco Military (a rather large folder) and the Sypderco Sage Carbon Fiber. Good luck.

For a general use folder, my Kershaw Leek is my favorite of all that I've had. I've had more expensive ones, but it has a great edge and is a tightly built knife. And they're available everywhere.

awesome thank you so much everyone now to find a place out here that has anything you all lised thank you again so much

It may be like my work where they consider fixed blades to be weapons, and folders to be tools. And yes, some guys carry those Bud-K made in china HUGE ninja folders, but an Izula would be out.

With that in mind, I'd say get him a multi tool like the Swiss tool

Gerber ez-out or gator. Kershaw Blur or Leek

All should be commonly available and inexpensive at local sporting good stores.

Also, you can get a Buck 110 folder anywhere for about $25 this time of year. Still the best folder ever made, imho

I am an electrician, I carry a SwissTool original and a Benchmade assisted opening folder with a D2 blade. I prefer the assisted opening folder because most times my other hand is full, holding wire or whatever and sometimes I have gloves on and the thumbstud and assisted opening works well with little input from my thumb. I use my multi-tool EVERY day. Most people prefer the Leatherman, but I have to say it is worth a look at the SwissTool from Victorinox. Just my 2cents worth. Good Luck!

I'm having a hard time reading the Original Posters Posts because of the lack of punctuation, but based on Lighstryder's posts, I can recommend a Benchmade Mini-Grip and a Leatherman Charge TTi multi-tool. I'm also an electrician and because of the same reasons that Lightstryder mentioned, one handed opening is key. That's why I like the leatherman Charge series tools and Wave series. They have one handed opening tools on the outside.

Good luck.:)
