Work Rest; Yea or Nay? How do you grind bevels?

Pablo,
Thanks for bring up the grinding position. I grind seated You can lean forward and brace your elbows on your knees. I also am put together with titanium pins in my spine and standing in one place gets really uncomfortable really fast. When I started almost 20 years ago I was told that I couldn't grind knives sitting down.

Well, yes you can. So find what works for you and remember that there is really no wrong way to make a knife. :)

I grind standing, but saw really good knifemakers grind seated, you are another example :)

I grind seated as well; my arms go to sleep if I grind standing for too long. If its bevels being ground its the confy chair with the foot rest. Getting old is hell.

I learned to grind without a tool rest.

I've tried grinding with a tool rest, and I can't tell much of a difference compared to freehand.

It would probably reduce fatigue on large batches though.

You might be able to go a bit faster once you got the hang of it. Fatigue and other things will slow you down.
