Looking to upgrade my work rest.

I am looking at the DD Extreme work rest is there anyone out there making something similar or better?

Don Dentz "DD" is the man. As far as I know no one out there is making anything that can compete with his, and his stuff works great.

Whole heartedly reccomdened.

I have the best of both worlds... I use the Wilmont TAG tool rest arm (which is one of the most amazing on the market I believe) in combination with DD's 15" table and grinding jig when needed. I have magnets mounted to my table so I can interchange jigs and tables on the fly, very quick and very easy

I copied the Wilmont tool rest and use it all the time now. I have a DD tool rest that just gathers dust. It takes too long to set up for me. Larry

Is Wilmont Grinders still in business?

Chris is alive & kicking. Bought a large batch of my Fibger Skins to sell at Blade! I’ve heard it is taking a break from building grinders ??? Email him..
I know he is making knives, but I do not like to bother people until I am ready to purchase something.

I emailed him the other day, he took a year break to redesign his grinder it sounds like, I don't know when that year starts or ends though. Will be interesting to see what he comes up with! Maybe Chris, aka @blindhogg can chime in next time he's around =)

I don t know for what kind of tool rest you look for but here is what I make and use .I try to keep it simple ..............just two bolts for set up .

i own the DD work rest, it works fine but if you put some pressure on it , it will move slightly. i mainly use it for the 45 degree angles along the edge, and grinding clips and swedges.

I like my DD rest but you're right, it does take some time to adjust. I really like that design, I think I'm going to copy that too!

Really nice. Wish I had the means to make that

You actually could do it with a drill press and hacksaw if needed.

I used a mini mill to drill the holes and a bandsaw to cut the slots.

The longest time was figuring out the sizes, orientation and fitting to the wheel as well as the flat platen. Several hours of tweaks and positioning for it to work

Yeah I agree that sometimes it's more of a pain than it's worth, but it's a pretty simple swap for me to make (takes about 5 minutes to set up). It's more of the side to side switching that I don't like (takes time), then the flats get scratched a little - so I only use it on compound grinds - everything else is freehand.

Did you tap your clamp bolt holes perpendicular to the saw cuts or the bar? Looks like the bar. I was wondering how that worked part of the reason I haven't done something similar is not wanting to drill and tap all those angles holes
