So I finally got around to buying a work sharp bench stone set up to enjoy my first day off in four weeks.

I even bought the extra strop kit with the two other diamond grits to complete the set.

Decided to try out the strop and have a few brews. To my amusment they included a small "starburst" square of green compound and some petroleum jelly in a single use, first aid style, tear open wrapper.

Interestingly, the instructions say to apply the a light amount of jelly to the strop and then crayon on the compound.

Never heard of that.

To my surprise it worked great and prevented caking and streeking and made applications easy.

The compound seemed to melt into the strop. Weird.

The package states "0.5 micron" that's cool but seems skeptical.

The results were great though.

Whittled a hair.

I think there green compound is more abrasive than 0.5 micron. I have 2 other brands that are labeled 0.5 micron and they're definitely finer....It works great but can tell it's removing more steel than the rest by how quickly it turns black compared to the others.

How do you like the entire guided system. I'm looking at buying my first sharpener. Would this be a good suggestion? Thanks

I love it. Now when I travel for work. My kit is more compact. I can use it without the base for field sharpening. I can repair edges, reprofile, remove plates and file parts and edges.

It's also affordable.

It can be used for beginners and experts alike.

The "Pivot response" really helps beginners prevent rounding off tips.

It also has guilds for 20° and 17° to help find angles when learning.

Best of all. These feature can be removed or turned off.

It doesn't relay on gimmicks.

I still love my waterstones though. But I've been doing a lot of sharpening latery and have needed to expedite the process to save time.
