I am wondering how pistachio behaves when not stabilized, like if it is prone to tear out, how it will shape, sand. I have seen pictures of really nice looking pistachio handles, but I don't know if they are stabilized, or how they are finished. Would like to know what they look like stabilized vs not, and if not, if they have a finish product applied.

If you can share some experience with this wood, thanks in advance,

Andy

I have some that I plan on sending to K&G for stabilizing. When I was buying a bunch of wood I did a lot of reading and it at least takes it well. Not sure if it 100% needs it though. Maybe Ben will see this and give you some expert advice.

Its pretty nice when natural. The wood is surprisingly dense, about the same density as Bocote or indian rosewood. Tear out isnt a huge issue unless your saws are painfully dull.

I would compare its workablilty to a little tough than bocote. Make sure its dry though. Its stable when dry, but its high hardness and density mean wet pieces can start to crack.

If you dont have a moisture meter, you can send a small piece to me and I can test it with mine.
