Good morning all! It’s been a while since I’ve posted on BF. Just a question about workbench’s. I have this Whiskey barrel that’s just sitting around, nice and heavy. Would this make a good home for a drill press or grinder or some other shop tool? With a 24”x24” ply top attached? Just a thought as I’m looking at getting into the knife making trade and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have two whiskey barrels on each side of the door my woodshop. I mixed up a batch of epoxy resin ( for fiberglass work) an covered the top with a good layer. I did the bottom, the next day. This sealed the ends from any water damage, but left the sides rustic. Italso guaranteed they won't start tilting as the wood ages. I put all sorts of decorative things on top of them, and when I am having a yard party, I bring them out as stand up tables for drinks and snacks out by the cornhole boards. When sitting by the shop, they are supported on some bricks to keep the bottom of the ground.

Yeah, It was a nice table with a 3/4” glass top but my GF doesn’t like it much so I figured it could serve as an equipment table for a press or grinder or something. Just wondering if it would work.

I don't know one way or the other, but you are putting a relatively heavy machine on the weakest parts of the barrel. If you put something over the top that extended to the staves if would be much stronger.

Yes, it would have a plywood top attached.
