Good evening all,

As a recent member of this fine forum, I have gotten caught up in the immense spirit of generosity exhibited here. I have no big forum accomplishments to celebrate, no special occasion to commemorate, nothing more than my appreciation for the fine folks who frequent this sub-forum and the general holiday spirit that should be exhibited this time of year.

I have but a modest collection of knives, mostly comprised of modern types, though I hope to surpass that with more traditional cutlery in the not so distant future. So as a prize, I will offer up something that reflects what works for the budget conscious working man.

With that said, let's celebrate the working man or woman! Folks who appreciate tools that are purpose built and budget friendly.

To enter, simply describe the traditional knife that you feel offers the best bang for your buck, your workhorses that have provided you the best value. And as it seems appropriate for this sub-forum, pictorial accompaniment is very much encouraged!

As a prize, I will be offering up a brand new Opinel No. 8 in stainless with a walnut handle accompanied by a custom pocket/lanyard sheath made by yours truly. The knife and an example of my work is displayed below.

I will select a winner via random number generator on New Years Day to help usher in a brand new year. The winner will get to select color, text, etc for the sheath and once finalized, I will make it and get it sent off as soon as possible.

Thank you all again for making this an awesome place. Merry Christmas!

Well Pàdruig, I was going to say that I am not in, but that sheath offer got me intrigued. I do love handmade gear. So I am in.

(I also know that when I do GAWs I really like to see people entering, rather than just saying "not in")

The best bang for the buck for me is the plain old Case Sodbuster Jr. It isn't as big as the full-sized soddy, but even for my hands it is big enough for a pocket knife. It is a great knockaround tool. the blade is functional and simple. The rather wide handle strikes a great balance of pocketability and filling out the hand. Plus, it is great to be able to buy a US made knife of good quality for under 30 bucks.

I agree that the best bang for the buck is in the Case Sodbuster Jr. I don't yet have one. I carry an Opinel #4 carbon, in my pocket, at all times. I wish it had a lock ring like the #6. I use a stainless #6 for gardening, along with a Victorinox Gardener. I just gave a #8 stainless, with walnut handle, to my brother on his birthday. A nice knife!

Not an entry, but that is one gorgeous pouch! I'm a big fan of the ring especially!

Great idea for a giveaway, a fine gesture and a fine knife. I am an Opinel fan and the pouch looks wonderful.

I am budget conscious so I can answer this one without hesitation. I like to pick up old USA Schrade knives. Typically stockman. They can be found on flea bay or in some used goods stores for around $30. I don't go for the collector pieces or the specially old, just good solid working knives.

I am in! For me, the best "bang for your buck" knife is the Opinel. I can pick up an Opinel at any online store for $15, and all that I need in a knife is taken care of by that cheap working knife.

Thanks Pàdruig, I'm in for an Opinel and that beautiful handmade sheath. I'll match your French Opinel with my French Douk-Douk. Indestructible and practical. Have a happy and healthy holiday.

This is not an entry. I just want to say this is a very nice gesture and an excellent GAW. It's nice to see this time of year can still bring out the best in people.

Nice idea for a giveaway, it's good to have you here Padruig  Great prize, and I love that sheath, well done

Not an entry for me please, but I'll post a pic :) Good luck everyone, and thanks for the giveaway Padruig

When I'm tinkering, the Hultafors usually gets pulled out of the tool box. Thanks for the chance.

Great looking sheath! Nice work. When i think hard working, rugged and affordable folding knife, i think Opinel.

For usefulness and bang for buck I think Opinelbis the way to go!

I am definitely in. Inox and Walnut? With a cover/sheath? I'd out that right in the rotation.

Here is one of my carbon workwork horses.

Not an entry, but wanted to say that you are another fine example of the quality of people in this sub-forum. Very generous and thoughtful, thank you.

I'm in and welcome to the porch! Best bang is hard, but I'll put up a TL-29 electricians knife. It's hard to beat the giant stiff spear(I've met some 10s on the pull before), and the wire stripper blade is so useful, far beyond just stepping wire. Screwdriver, scraper, safety edge, you name it , and it seems it can do it.
Thanks, Neal

Congrats for finding us, and thanks for the giveaway.

My most bang for the buck is this Queen #06L teardrop linerlock with it's great D2 spear blade and beautiful amber stag bone. I paid around $45 shipped for it some years ago, and it's probably been in my pocket more than any other knife.

When I think of best bang for your buck in the knife world, the typical red SAKs come to mind first for me! Here is one of mine:

Following closely for me are the Opinals and the sodbuster:thumbup:

Not a entry, just welcome to best place in the net. Your leather work looks great. You were saying that you have no big forum accomplishment, but in fact you have. Having a GAW is big accomplishment :)
Here is an old knife that was gifted t me not long ago but has its share of hard cutting job around the house.

The best deal for your money currently is the Kershaw/Emerson 6K folders. I have owned two and carried both as EDCs. They make great knives. However these aren't technically traditional.

I would have to go with a Buck lock back knife as the best traditional EDC knife for the money on the current market. They aren't bad knives, however I hate the fact that the pivot is a peen/pin, and not a pivot screw that you can re tighten without hammering or re-peening.

Please count me in!! Thanks for the gesture and chance!
