Working on a new forge

What length nipple do you suggest for going into the forge? that's a 6" one on there currently, 10" 12"?

Are there any pottery kiln stores or the like around here that I can buy fire brick locally? The last time I got some firebrick, half of them were broken by the time it got to me. Wasnt very nice =(
 
8" +. try checking out a brick place. i found mine at the hardware store/lumber yard here in town. $1.05/each. 2"x4"x8". masonry stores should have it too.
