Working on SS scales

All this talk is giving me ideas. Like putting on a micarta scale onto the left-hand scale of my SS Dragonfly. I have some 1/8" maroon micarta that I can use. I would probably use Vess' method of epoxying on a piece of micarta, and then filing and sanding the micarta down to shape. I might not be able to get the excellent results that Vess gets, but I should be able to do okay with it. I'm not looking to produce a masterpiece, just something that's pretty good. For example, scratches on the metal spine don't bother me at all.
Now all I have to do is move from the thinking- about-it stage and move on to the actually-doing-it stage. Hmmmm.

huh, synchronicity. I have been wondering how to affix thin stag scales to a SS dragonfly. I think epoxy should hold it. But does anyone know how to finely-shape stag, can you do it with a dremel, or is the bone too brittle? also, anyone know where to get really thin stag scales? Cuz that would look awesome!

Actually bone to me is the easiest material to work with Fish, just make sure it's dry before you start.
I started out using just a Dremel vari speed tool and a Dremel drill press.
Pick a section of the antler/bone/any horn material that's oversized for the scale you want, saw out a section then split it lengthwise on a scroll saw (I guess you could use a miter box) the idea is to get 1 flat side then work the other down to however thin you want the scales, then it's a very simple job of just sanding the material down to fit your knife.
Bone is some what brittle but unless you drop it on concrete or try to force a tool thru it you should be able to do just fine.
It's very machineable and if you use the 2 part clear epoxy it should last forever.
Jantz supply has a complete line of synthetic and natural materials, but if you hunt or know someone who does I'm sure they would part with some antler material, also you can check the meat processing centers in your area, they usually just throw the antlers away if it's not going into a trophy mount, good luck and we wanna see pics when finished. I know it sounds weird but it is illegal to use native SC deer antlers for any commercial product. If it is for personal use it might be OK but don't get caught selling any. Check with SCDNR about this before producing any.

I've lived here 46 yrs and have never heard of such a thing, once an animial is checked into a station, that deer is considered your property.
If I were simply killing FOR just the antlers maybe that would be different.
If it's breaking any laws there's a damn zillion felons running around these woods

I was just told that even though you hunted it and paid for it that is was illegel to sell any part of it,but what they don't know won't hurt them.

I read the same thing Jeff, but I was assuming they meant you can't sell un inspected meat.
Either way, I will still use what I want for my knife handles, I find it a gross waste of a fine material to just let antlers that someone could create something beautiful from just be dumped in the landfill because of some stupid law. Ron
