Working Prototype and some folder questions

Hey all, I "finished" this one up yesterday. As finished as she is going to get for being a prototype. I have been wanting to do a folder for a while so I finally tried one once Fitzo told me I didn't need a surface grinder to complete one.

I used 1/8 pure nickel for the scales (if that is proper folder terminology) and spacer, 0.050 6Al-4V for the liners, and 1/8 C1095 for the blade. I used what I had around the shop so the screws are some big ole ugly 4-40's and the pivot and stop pin are 1/8 steel dowels that I tried to press and pein with mixed results. I went through and heat treated the blade and sharpened it so I might make this one my first EDC to give her a test run.

I used Ray Roger's tutorial and I have to give a big thanks to him for that. Pretty darn easy to follow. The nicest thing is how the lock up turned out. There is no play and it has a nice "click" when it goes into the full open position.

So now for my questions:

1) I used the "bolt thru" design, but when I want to put bolsters and scales on, I just screw the liners together with the spacer and then screw the bolsters and stuff to the liners. Right???

2) To do #1 what thickness 6-4 Ti should I use to allow the tapped holes to give enough bite for the screws?

3) Where do you all buy the screws, pivot, stop pins, thumb studs, etc.?

4) What does the ball detent do? I tried putting one in this guy, but it fell out when I was peining the pins. Does it hold the blade in the closed position, or does it keep the lock from rubbing/maring the blade?

Oh yeah, here she is in all her uglyness. Thanks for your help.

I like it :) Very clean design. It reminds me of the cat claws that are at the moment being dug into my leg.
I think you have a winner.

Nice looking folder. To answer you questions......

#1 Yes

#2 .050 is a good thickness, I use .040 on smaller folders.

#3 R. B. Johnson

#4 It does both, It holds the blade shut and keeps the lock from rubbing on the side of the blade.

Hope this helps, Don Hanson lll

Sean, I told you that Wednesday night and Saturday evening you show up with a first folder despite having a fulltime job and other obligations. Damn your youthful energy and enthusiasm!!! ;) ;)

Well done, guy!!! And I must compliment the fact that for a first proto it's nicely styled, too! Guess I'm gonna have to get my butt in gear...
