Working Trapper knives

First post, and after lurking here for a year or so, this thread is what finally made me add a membership to my account and add a few pics. Mostly because yesterday my son and I were at a hardware store and happened upon a nice case trapper in delrin and CV along with a nice pancake sheath. Pure coincidence I come across this thread last night.

Of course, being a Case, I had to check out 4 of them before I found one with decent fit and finish, no blade wobble, and good blade centering. But, it's a nice one and a keeper that'll be put to work.

I grew up in a farming family and still help out around the family farms every so often when we head back east. My wife grew up on a farm and her family still farms and keeps livestock. A few months back I was helping my in-laws work about a hundred steer calves. Didn't need to use a knife the way we were working them, but I still had a GEC slip joint on me. I think this trapper will do nicely next time we head back and I'm put to work.
Nice find! That’s a pretty cool hardware store to have that knife and sheath. Was it a chain or a local store?

It was a "local chain" of hardware stores here in the SF Bay area is the best way I can put it. But the one location my son and I visited where I picked up the knife and sheath turned out to be a Case platinum dealer. Oddly, their other store locations closer to our house don't have any knifes at all even though they are under the same name. The sheaths were a total surprise - the sheath I picked up and most of the others available were from A&M Leatherworks out of Texas.

what store? I'm in the bay too and have never heard about it!

I'd forgotten that I had this one. Ran across it in the cross-bed tool box in my truck. It was a bit grungy so I cleaned it up with a bit of sandpaper. You can see the verdigris working up from the brass liners via the pins and also starting to show at the bolster-cover transitions. I'll just put it back in the tool box but wrap it in a piece of oiled flannel.

I don't currently own any traditional knives. Just moderns. Last year Wal-Mart had case trappers for Christmas. I got one shortly after they discounted them twice. Got it for $17.
I used it almost all year before selling it. It was a EDC for me. I took it to work framing. I also heavily got into learning how to sharpen on that knife. For the first time I was able to put a edge on a knife and got compliments at work for having a sharp knife. I didn't work in a office. Construction framing, so i could pass my knife to whom i want to test it. I never carried it in a sheath though. I have a sheath now that would be good. Has no pocket clip. Which is how I prefer for this style of knife. Not clipped on a belt. In a sheath in a pocket to stop clings with change etc.

I am hoping this Christmas that Wal-Mart gets them again. I did fall in love with the simplicity of the trapper. Here is my only pic remaining of her.

Been carrying this case trapper in my back pocket alongside my wallet for about 20 years. Bought a new larger wallet and now the knife won't fit. Now that I have this belt sheath I don't know how I got along without it. Knife is a lot more accessible especially when sitting down.

I do live in the Wild, Wild West but I'm sorry to disappoint.
Well being a city slicker you won't see any outdoor work with mine. I mean as good as it gets is working outside near the dumpster; who wants to see that. Lots of indoor work though.

The full size Trapper (Case or Boker) are some of my very favorite knives period as far as handle size / shape and blade shape. The only thing that kicks them out of my pocket (sheath) for long is something with some more durable steel (CASE ARE YOU LISTENING TO THIS ? !)

Yup . . . got to have the belt sheath.

The Trapper is a favorite for me to mod. I either remove the spay blade or shorten it into a wharncliffe.

These are all knives I use at work except the polished scale black Slimline Case Trapper (top knife in photo below) which is a dress knife.
I have several more full size Trappers.

I just got these two Case Slimline trappers a week apart. The laminated canvas is going to be a dedicated work knife and I will keep the polished handled one for very light careful use. Translation; I don't want to scratch up the polished handle.

I like how you cropped the spey and made it into a wharncliffe. I tried this once, but botched the nail nick ... can you please tell us how you cut that nail nick so nicely (what kind of tooling / machinery was used) ? Thank you -

John
