Hello everyone, this is my first post here among the professionals. I need to know some information on making knife scales made from mesquite burl. I am planning to cut a burl off of a mesquite tree and use it. So do I need to cut the slabs first while it is green? Or do I need to let it dry before working with it. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

I would cut it green, and cut the slabs oversize. Woodworking stores sell a wax emulsion like thick paint that can be painted on green wood to help prevent cracking. If cracks start, fill with super glue.
Mesquite burl is awesome. I envy you.

Thanks for the info, I am covered up in Mesquites here. Thought I might as well use it for something besides BBQ.

In about 2 years, you should have some nice dry pieces to use if you can keep them from checking

Gadsden, if you can find some mesquite that is covered in mistletoe, that can have some extremely nice figure. I grew up in Arizona where I had access to all kinds of mesquite. Now in NM where I live the mesquite's are bushes not trees. To get good mesquite I need to go to Texas.

Mesquite likes to check as it dries - especially burl. Personally, I'd leave the green pieces large so you can work around the cracked/checked parts once it dries out...

Thank you to all who responded, I knew I would get great information if I posted here. Now the hard part begins, finding time to do it!!! I wish someone could give advice on that problem for me!!! When I do get around to this project I will try to post pictures for some feedback on how it looks to others. Thanks again and don`t go anywhere, I might have other questions!!
