I am very new to knife making and I have picked up a couple of sets of mammoth tooth scales from Charles Turnage, man he does some awesome work, and I would like to know they best way to shape it to a great finished product.

Both knives I am planning on using the mammoth tooth scales on are fixed full tang blades. Any advice would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

Be very gentle with it. No holes near the edges is best, don't get it hot. Sharp drills and belts. It looks great don't it. I would avoid sharp corners etc also. I put a bolster on both ends to protect it. Enjoy and good luck

Thanks for the advice! When using belts do you use the same type of belts you use for shaping the balde and profile?

I cut mine close to profile with a fine toothed band saw blade and then used a bout 120 grit and up as I finished them. Wear a respirator, it smells and is not good for you.

I guess a respirator is the next thing on my list to get. Any particular cartridge I should be getting?

It does make nice bolsters too.

Now that is sharp, really sets off the ivory on the first knife. What is the rest of the handle on the second. Love it to. Wonderful work

Sorry to hijack but man Micheal you do some outstanding work!:eek: Always a viewing pleasure! That will give you something to shoot for 82Stang!
