I've not had this device for very long, but I've been quite impressed with its performance on my folders. And/but today I tried an 8" kitchen knife, and I was not surprised to see that the blade flexes & twists a bit. I aready knew that there are a few clamping alternatives...so off I went to look them up. It seems logical that a pair of jaws--2 or 3 inches apart--would be superior to the stock clamp, but there seem to be other (even better?) options out there provided one buys an adapter of some sort. Could someone kindly offer some guidance/opinions? I am not a machinist, so I'd prefer something fairly straightforward.
Many thanks!

I am a machinist .
I am offering my straitforward opinion / best choice .

. . . but you are not going to like it .
Yes I have a Wicked Edge on hand . . .
but

I am grateful for the response, but your guess as to my reaction is correct.

To my eye, the mechanism of attachment for the narrow/single-claw clamp is fine; it is the jaw itself that is the weak lnk. Gritomatic offers a dual-claw alternative ** that appears to solve the big knife problem. I was kinda hoping someone would comment on that solution.

** The alternative device is on backorder right now, but it has a pair of claws that look to be about 3" apart. I'm in no position to procure yet another complete system. Rather - I'm hoping that I can modify the just-purchased WSPAP for alot less than a new system.

The Gritomatic "planeshift" clamp upgrade paired up with their RS Whole milled angled clamps is one of the best solutions available, not only for larger knives but it also clamps most other smaller blades grinds better and much more securely than the original Pro Precision adjust clamp can ever do.

The other great solution (Leading Edge Core platform) from Gritomatic works equally well, it does large and small blades, and even scissors if you so choose.

That's more like it! Thank you very much! But I am puzzled by something: When I follow the link from the previous post it takes me to the complete kit with Hapstone/Planeshift bar, two Hapstone clamps, Planeshift cylinder & support block for $69. Perfect - that's exactly what I want.

(from the web page)
Kit Content
Hapstone Planeshift Clamp Bar
Hapstone RS Clamps
Planeshift Attachment
Support Block

But...

If I click on the "Upgrades/Clamp Upgrades", I land on a page that only shows the cylinder & the bar for $69...and there is a notation that says "Clamp-Ready". And clicking on one of the 3 choices nearly doubles the price(?) Now - I'm an incredibly good-looking man, and you'll never meet a more courteous speaker. That certainly qualifies me for a fabulous discount, but user '777 Edge' would have no way of knowing that, so I wonder what I am missing(?)

It gives you the option of 3 different clamp types, or no clamps at all. If someone already has a Hapstone system, it gives them the option of buying this product without any clamps for the basic price.

So, on the product page it expects you to select your choice of clamp (just below the price is a selection option for clamp type). This then shows the total price, including the clamps you've chosen.

The "RS Whole milled angled clamps" is a very good choice in my opinion. They are very versatile clamps. The "universal angled clamps" is also a great choice, but they take and allow more geometry adjustment and might some getting used to.

Hope that helps!

It does help - thank you. I'll have to wait for the next sale - the acquisition of the WSPAP set me back alot.
Cheers!

I'd like to PM you, but it appears that I do not have access. Do I need to post 'X' number of times? Do I need to pay? (Or am I just dense?)

Need to upgrade to a paid membership. $10 will get you started, but $30 gets you a gold membership that's worth the scrilla.
