Worksharp PRO ! ( Next level )

I was forced to learn free hand sharping/grinding in trade school as a watchmaker. Grinding HSS turning tools on a old fashioned stone for hours to a mirror polish. Teachers inspected them under a microscope. 1 degree off? Not perfectly flat? Do it again. Give me a fixed angle system or a belt grinder any day of the week. As far as im concerned a wet stone is antiquated technology for sharpening knives these days, something for romantics. Fixed angle systems to it better, faster, more consistently & leave me with less cramped hands when im done. A stone is used for sharpening my screwdriver blades these days, or for removing 0.02mm from a part or putting a satin finish on it when im done.

IMO, free hand sharpening is neither antiquated or inferior.

Guided systems are great but you have to spend a fair amount of money on a good one.

I don't know what others are on about with hand cramps or edges last longer or you take less material off with a guided system, none of that is true.

Actually , hand sharpening is Antiquated ! It's 10s of thousand of antiquated years old !
Now , as to being inferior ... ? That's where skill comes in ..
So the guy with 20 years exp is probably going to do better than a Noob ..
But what could that Noob do on a guided system ?

Anyways .... Only 950 slices on a 80 grit grind .. ( Wet Stone Grinder ) Spyderco Mule SPY27 ( I'm a little disappointed )

Antiquated was used in a context of being out dated which it isn't, and if a "noob" cannot get a comparable edge free hand then the only thing inferior is their free hand skill.

Each to their own, guided systems are great as i said, but there are distinct pros and cons to either guided or free hand.

As you said , Context ! Or Perspective !
I'm not sure how many people are prepared to invest the time and effort into hand sharpening ? ( Especially if they don't have to )
These days there are other options .. Options that are faster / easier / and comparable if not perhaps superior ( especially for Noobs ) .
Back in the day , there were no other options . Hand sharpen or learn to live with a dull knife .
These days there are many options at many price points .

A little like asking a kid ...
Do you want to go outside and play in the dirt barefoot ?
Or stay inside in airconditioned comfort playing your Xbox . or . Playstation ? ( Hell , some kids have both )

It's no contest .. Technology is winning .. You can kick N scream about it all you like .. But these guided systems are kick ass ...
Not perfect for every occasion , but still Boss !
And If I could go back 40 years and chose ? hmmm , indeed ! Which guided system would I chose ? It's no contest ! not even a race !
A little like choosing between a 2023 Mustang and a early Model T ( To drive ) .
Everything is a vanishing art ..
I used to make my own model airplanes out of balsa wood and dope N tissue paper , these days it's RTF
I used to make my own arrows ( well assemble them ) , these days it's mostly Ready to use Carbon .
I used to hunt with a model 94 , these days everything 20x scope and Long Range
I used to stalk , now they snipe !
I used a recurve , now everything is Uber fast Ultra Cam & Carbon

Things change ! Some times for the better and some times for the worse .
People used to love freedom , now they love Super Nanny !
And hand sharpening is Antiquated ! It's what grand dad used to do .
If I were ( I would not ) , bit if I did - Knock on every door in my suburb ! How many people would be hand sharpening ?
And how many would be using some electric sharpener ? Or some method of Butchery ? And to all those people out there butchering knives I would say ---- Get a guided system !

I can't find it on the Work Sharp site and today is the big day...
Don't give up mate. They are having website issues, and it has gone down. They are still available, just wait till they get their website sorted.

I'm not sure I'd call this unit a "game changer", but I do think it appears to be a very complete kit that also fixed most of the "issues" of the previous system.

Like many others in here I have multiple sharpening systems including dozens of freehand stones, Edge Pro Apex, Work Sharp Ken Onion with blade grinding attachment, Sharpmaker, etc. I might pick one of these up in the future if someone makes an aftermarket stone holder that will hold edge pro stones because I love my diamond matrix stones.

This could be improved by providing a dual clamping system like tsprof. IMO

From what i can gather these sell out as soon as new ones are in stock.

I was lucky enough to grab on the second batch. I have not used it much yet, but so far, I like it. I sharpened a Spyder kitchen knife with it and got a pretty nice edge on fairly quickly. The knife is wider so I had to be careful not to apply too much pressure. I also have the Precision Adjust and I do like the pro better!
By the way, I am new here and this is my first post. I am looking forward to joining in!!
