WorkSharp Worth it?

Zombie thread resurrection!

I have the field sharpener, and it's not really cutting it (har har) for getting really shaving sharp edges any more. It was doing the job, but it seems like it just doesn't want to sharpen as well as when it was first purchased, I'm not sure why. I'm looking at the guided system to do a better job (and also for ease of cleaning, since you can't remove the ceramic rod from the field sharpener, and I don't want the strop piece to get wet either).

I did notice that the guides on the guided system for the stones are 17 and 20 degrees (I'd use the 20 degree bevel, so no problem there), however the guide for the ceramic rod is 25 degrees. Does this make sense? I always thought the angle should be consistent from stone to ceramic, am I wrong?

I'll be mostly sharpening my Boker Pipsqueak folder (my daily EDC), and my Esee fixed blades.
The 25° on the ceramic is in theory to micro bevel thou way to high of an angle, but then again so is 20° as the primary bevel.

Is it possible you were applying too much force to begin with and you dislodged a good portion of the diamonds or wore them out?

Could the stones just need to be cleaned because they're clogged up? You could probably just take a toothbrush or other stiff plastic bristle and clean them with water.

So the primary bevel is set by the diamond stones, and there's a secondary microbevel that's formed by the ceramic? Is that correct?

Both of these are possibilities. I use light to moderate pressure when sharpening, but I don't think I've pressed hard enough to dislodge the diamonds. How would I be able to tell?

I have the Worksharp GSS, and it's a wonderful tool. The pivot is not a gimmick and works as advertised. I would buy the upgrade kit as well. But for $100 bucks more you could get a KME... But you'll NEED some kangaroo strops and CBN emulsion, oh and you gotta have the chosera Water stones of course. Let us not forget you'll need a stropman strop (there is a waiting list) ... Lol
