Considering buying a regular work sharp knife and tool sharpener as i get annoyed of hand sharpening all the time, just wondering if it will work with thicker blade say up to a .25 inch thick spine(tops anaconda) and also will it sharpen scandinavian ground knifes and re-curves/tantos.... not sure if this is the right place for this or not by the way i don't really use these forum things much so sorry in advance.

WELCOME

Work Sharps have no trouble with .25" blades as BK2 and ESEE5 users will atest.

But ...

- the relatively loose belts of the WS will impart a convex thus converting any Scandi/Flat/V edge into a Convex Edge.

- belts are poor for recurves, especially small recurves, so you'll need to free-hand more and use the edge of the belt

- WS are notorious for rounding off the tips and Tantos essentially have 2 tips, so you need to be twice as careful

You'll probably get more/better responses in the Maintenance subforum - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/794-Maintenance-Tinkering-amp-Embellishment

Ive got the Ken Onion version. It is fantastic for BIG blades and general stuff like kitchen knives other than that you better learn how to use the sander without the guide to do anything else especially smaller knives. If you want a convex edge on a big chopper boy this will give it to you quick! Actually going for an angle? Take OFF the guide and eyeball it by hand its the ONLY way! Some folks are good at that and get amazing results but its got a high learning curve. Hell I ate up a SERE 2000 on mine ended up with a convex edge and rounded tip on a $200 knife. If you can afford a Worksharp you can likely afford something like an Edge Pro Apex. Sure its more time consuming but as long as you follow the directions you will be kicking out even grinds and mirror polishes the first day! My advice on Worksharp is unless you are sharpening kitchen knives en masse AVOID IT! Edge Pro you really learn how to sharpen and fast! I just dont have the room for one so I send my stuff to Razors Edge Knives. Josh there uses this maxed out with everything Wicked Edge for extra. Hes got belt sanders as well and he really knows how to use them but for a true pro grade Wicked Edge finish hes the way to go. I just dont have the patience to learn stones by hand and Ive got hundreds of knives...Id be sharpening round the clock lol good luck..

the edge pro looks ok but i do not really understand that 250 dollar pricepoint at all and it does not look like i could sharpen tanto's/recurves on it

There's no one-solution sharpener. Every one of them has strengths and weaknesses, good for this, poor for that.

If you have specific knives in mind then there are specific sharpeners that would perform best.

I currently use DMT stones and a DMT Aligner system for reprofiling and repairing edges. I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker and homemade strop for maintaining edges.

For my large blades, I built this over-sized 13"x18" cross-stick sharpener. Keeps my 9" BK9 razor sharp using just sandpaper.
