So whose watching the world cup?

I'm predicting a South Africa vs. France final.

Sorry to all the NZ and Oz fans...

I do believe I have found myself in the strange position of barracking for a SA sporting team. Go the Boks (anyone but England and their steroid freak front row)

I have been a rugby fan ever since I ended up in a rugby pub called The Den in Beijing last St. Patrick's day. The Six Nations is one HELL of an introduction.

As for finals ... anyone but England!

Also a question for fans stateside; where do you get your rugby fix? I haven't been able to find a good source.

I'd watch it if I could find it. I'm sure there is a bar or two in the city of Chicago that is televising the games, but they're probably at 4 in the morning. It'd be nice if they were on basic cable.

I should qualify my last comment by stating that I normally love England and cheer for them in every football (soccer) world cup. I just tend to dislike particular teams. Like Italy in Soccer, Collingwood in Aussie Rules etc; and the England Rugby establishment have just got the most smackable faces. I hope France thrash them but I fear they won't and it will be up to the Boks to deliver a suthern hemishpere style running rugby thrashing in the final.

Which brings me to my next point. I see the same phenomenon in many sports. In Aussie Rules - your fleet-footed, highly skilled types will win most regular games but when championships are on the line, when mistakes are more common and possesion has to be won more frequently - suddenly the unfashionable behemoths; the clydesdales of the sport (the ruckmen) start to have their say. We say in Aussie rules that midflielders will get you there but it's the big men that win championships.

I suspect it's the same in Basketball -I don't know enough about Gridiron to draw the same bow - but it appears to be the case in Rugby.

The All Blacks and the Wallabies, with their impressive, fast and flashy backs, were no match for the the fierce, strong packs of England and France when the real silverware was on the line.

There were mass suicides here in New Zealand.

Kidding, but seriously there have been a very sharp spike in crimes and especially in domestic violence since the All Blacks loss to France.
Not kidding about that one.

Go BOKS!!! They deserve it, they've clearly been the best team.

They had a very unimpressive win against Fiji though.

They should beat Argentina but if they get sloppy Argentina will surely take advantage...

Don't know why, but I never could stomach France's side... doesn't even matter who's on it.

Anybody got any current pics?

And Ming, you are damn right that the big men win championships. When I played, the pack would tire of those damn pretty boy backs messing the game up, so we would just take over. It got to the point where we would just ruck and roll and never give the ball to the backs. Nothing more satisfying than a push in try off a penalty scrum.

Who here, besides Rugger of course, is/has played Rugby? Retired for 13 years now loose-head prop here.

I've played mate. I was one of those effete prancing racehorses who'd spend ther whole time calling for the ball, doing their hair and avoiding having to tackle anyone:D It was the wing for me.

I only played a season at University - then came to my senses and went back to Aussie Rules full time.

I've seen religious cults that are less insane than the 'brotherhood of the scrum' - sheesh.

This Chabal character is becoming somewhat of a cult figure...

I played Lock when I was a lot younger then moved to Rugby League.
Too many instances where the pedantic refs interpretation ruins a game or like the England side they have an old hard pack that muscles up but they score hardly any tries and their backs are old and average.
Forwards and kicking goals make the sport a dead event as a spectacle.

Here are some pix for you

I played scrumhalf back in South Africa. I wasnt very good though. The heart was in it, the body just wasn't all that capable :)

That pic of the All-Blacks reminds me of what a travesty it was that they had to play in the grey strip in the QF. They've been the All Blacks for 100 years. How does it become their problem if another country changes their strip to something similiar?

Did not seem the same did it?
They wore that crappy grey strip a couple of times.
I thought they were "The ALL BLACKS"
What happened with France "Le Blues" or whatever they call themselves more like Le Dark Blues nearly blacks.
The results in the world cup will do a lot of damage downunder.
Credit to England their game plan and the passion they showed deserved their win.
The type of game they played not unlike 4 years ago will turn people in their droves to Rugby League.

It's a damned shame we don't get the matches live here- we get them on the versus network a couple of days late- (I guess I should be thankful of that, eh?) There is a bar that gets it on satellite- but it's a bit far away to get there w/ out a car & watching a match w/out a pint is like dryhumping.
I for some odd reason just do not like french rugby. Back in the day when I first was learning/playing the sport, the french style of play just didn't appeal to me- don't know why. I had a GF who spent some time working in Auckland NZ & brought me back a cool vintage-style ball (Adidas All-Blacks ball- brown leather w/ laces & black tips) and I had a friend who was asst. manager of a Canterbury of NZ store (great source of cheap & durable training jerseys) and there was always a tape of NZ rugby matches on the TV- so I have an affinity for NZ Rugby.
And Mongo- Yes my friend- there is nothing like muscling a try in :) I've played w/ good sides & bad sides, but when we had a good set of meat & lumber upfront, things usually went better. I have a lot of respect for all rugby players, but the ones w/ a single digit on their backs are my tribe.

Can't wait for the France-England match tomorrow. I hope it will be a good one.
Chabal is quite a star arround here lately. I'm surprised he keeps long hair and beard in a game where even ears can come off...

No Shit. That hair/beard is a liability. I'm certain more than a few players have had a handfull of it recently. One of the US locks got a handfull of hair of a Tonga jumper in a lineout- don't know if it was intentional or not.
I certainly wouldn't be running around w/ that many potential handles on my head.

BOK......jou bliksem!! Good to see another Saffa on the forum.

I even got satellite 2 weeks ago to watch the rugger world cup and now I discover that the games are not live. When I signed up they were careful to not tell me that!!
Anyway, even seeing it the day after is better than nothing. I have been in Canada (Montreal) for 11 years now and was going through withdrawel due to the lack of seeing rugby.

Just for the record gentlemen,;)
The forwards are where it is won or lost!!
To quote somebody, I don't know who, "If you want entertainment go and see a show, this is test rugby, all that matters is the scoreboard at the end".:D:D

Lovely to see so many rugger lovers.

GO BOKKE ( I also predict a SA vs FR final)

Mike
