World's Toughest Folding Knives

The design has the potential to be very tough.
If you beef up the pivot pins, then all of a sudden you have something that will be strong.

Most balisong knives out there are decidedly not tough, but it would be very easy for someone to make a damn tough one. :)
I do love the idea of a bombproof bali-song!

A Charlie Mike (CMFTW Knives) bali would be pretty tough; he made a hefty one out of 154cm; even the handles...

Similar to this one; couldn't get the other pic to work...:foot:

Me too!
I couldn't have one here, but I'm sure there must be a market for such a thing.
I imagine at least some the beautiful custom balis must be pretty tough...i don'tknow if he's finished it yet, but Collin of Rad Knives was working on a balisong. I have no doubt that when completed, it will be one of the strongest if not the strongest bali out there - @radknives on IG if you want to check it out.. and actually now that I think of it his folders easily rank amongst the toughest most bomb-proof knives available as well

At this point, with almost 4 full pages of responses, I'm pretty sure that we have already established the criteria for toughness and what we and OP mean...if you're really wanting more clear criteria and aren't just playing the internetforumquestionalllinguisticsandsemanticsgame then see my first response in this thread and you'll find my criteria.

Back on page 1 your responded with the following:

Between your response, along with the other mentions of balisongs (one of which seems like it might be more tongue-in-cheek than anything else) no reasoning or criteria are provided, so I am genuinely curious as to where you're coming from with this opinion as I have never considered a balisong when contemplating tough knives that can take a beating...

LOL good one man, can't put it better than you did

Of course it's possible to make the balisong tough with beefy pivot. Anyone can make a 6mm thick blade with 6mm thing lock/pivot. But IMO pound for pound triad is still stronger, by design.

I have carried a balisong(s) for some time before I ever discovered BF. The standard test for a balisong was stabbing a coin. A balisong won't fail doing whatever it is unless the pivot pins fail or the handle material gives way. In my experience a balisong is tougher than your regular liner lock or a backlock. Most souvenir type balisongs are weak as you may expect with low quality products, but some makers do give attention to detail to their products.

If balisongs weren't illegal in most places, I'm sure you'd be seeing a lot of overbuilt balisongs by now.

I am sure that a balisong made with the same materials and dimensions as say a demko would be pretty tough.

Have you ever used a balisong?

The responses given here about specific knives being tough weren't questioned. When Andrew Demko specifically says balisongs are weak, I asked what kind of tests were applied.

So what makes you think balisongs are weak?

It is pretty funny though when I have to prove what criteria to claim that a balisong is tough and when you say it's not, you don't have to have a basis to say that.

First off thanks forexplaining some of your history with carrying and using balisongs...

I actually wasn't trying to say that they aren't tough and I don't necessarily think they arent tough - honestly I haven't used or handled enough balis to have an opinion either way.

My desires were for nothing more than to understand balis a little better than i currently do. Thanks again  [emoji106]

Yup, I worked in my farm since 1990 and I have been carrying balis since I was in high school. Balis filled my needs until I found BF and Spydercos, then things got crazy. :D
