Worries about carrying a very expensive slipjoint

I have a lot of knives. The forum EO jack was my biggest cash outlay. I love carrying it. To me, the price is not the thing...most of my knives are cheapish and could be replaced. The irreplacable ones...rare finds and family knives stay home. No amount of money could replace them. But they are few.

Knives are tools. And the joy of a great knife is using it. If I could conceivably get another one, I carry it. If it is one of a kind, I carry it only if I KNOW I can't lose it.

And yeah, no offense to anyone, but a pocketknife goes in my pocket. No slips, sleeves, or stress. Scratches are character.

If it gets too many "character" marks, you can always send it back to the maker for a fluff and buff.

Hi Chris -

I just carry them in my front pocket and make sure that there are no keys or change etc in that pocket to mar the finish on the knife.

I don't fear losing them as I just have not had that problem.

I do not have any Bose knives, but I do have several that I place a high value on - my JD Ellis from South Africa, for instance.

They just beg to be carried and used, so that's what I like to do!

Thought for the day. Several years ago, my home was broken into and several knives that I wasn't carrying were stolen, including a couple of irreplaceable customs. Not carrying it doesn't guarantee you won't lose it.

Oh My Gosh! I just about went into a panic attack. I seriously never considered that someone could break into my house and steal my steel. It's just not something I've ever thought about. After my heart rate slowed down, just now, I realized that the only risk of a break-in resulting in the loss of my knives, is if someone I know does it. There's really NO risk of folks breaking in to my house to steal ANYTHING, as there would be nothing worth taking (except my knives :D) We live a pretty simple life, so we'd be more worried about someone LEAVING something rather than taking something...

I've used that argument before, when convincing my wife we were not at risk when the door was accidentally left unlocked for a weekend.

I have only 2 knives worth over $300, and they regularly make the EDC rotation. The only knives I've lost were more a result of careless mislplacement, or forgetfullness than sliding out of a pocket. Since those losses, I am ALWAYS aware of where I set my knives, when in use.

While not a high $$$ custom like a Bose, the John Lloyd baby bullet trapper he made for me has been in my pocket since day one. Slips right into the coin pocket and gets used daily.

I have never had the urge to send any of my customs in for a "fluff & buff" as I do not want to erase the memories I have of using them.

I dont have any that expensive. But if it has a lanyard hole USE IT get the largest lanyard you can carry within reason and strap it on. Carry it in jeans with nice, deep pockets. I you use it, dont set it down anywhere, when you are done cutting putt it right back in your pocket.
I hope this helps. Just be carefull and remember that it is a tool, made to cut.

Run a string or cord through the lanyard hole, and tie it to your belt-loop. If it falls out, you wont lose it. Thats how I carry my keys. No worries then. :D

I bought a Case/Bose Coffin Jack. Dropped on my ceramic tiled floor the next day. Oooops. I was going to carry it anyway. Now I don't have to worry about scratching it.

Also, piles of knives in a picture touching each other also worries me.

Sorta like this?

Is there a piece of kydex or something to make the backing on those great looking cases

I buy to be able to use, and don't believe in irreplaceable knives. They are but steel and handle material, and steel and handles can be remade. Memories associated with a knife can be memories without the knife, and all memories fade with enough time. I enjoy using my knives, and having a fine combination of steel and handle available to use, look at, or show off (a bit) makes me happy. To each their own, but there is no knife I've ever seen that I thought was too good to be put to use.

No Sir...leather backing, then thicker leather cut to knifes profile, then suede on the front.they are a tight enough fit so you can hold upside down and they wont fall out.not trimmed or sewn yet but they do the trick..15 minutes each to make...big deal!....FES

I have a Boker Lockback and another small folder that live in a sharkskin Mission Wallet. Totally fit they are there 90% of the time, those are my backups for when someone at work needs a loaner ( they sure ain't borrowing my Lloyd !).

I carry my T.Bose Wharncliffe Trapper all the time. Tony carried this one for a while, and another friend owned it for a year, but it lived in his safe. When I got it several years ago, it looked new, but I was just examining it, and it is a little beat up; but I would feel naked without it.
The wharncliffe blade is starting to look a little thin (my favorite, go-to blade), but I figure it might last 10 or more years.
There's more to life than pocket knives and money, but a life is well lived if you get to carry one of Tony's fine knives as you live it!!

There's no right or wrong on this stuff. We all make and live with our choices.

Some skiers feel this way about their skis. Don't let them get scratched. When they're that expensive, it's understandable. In thin conditions, some skiers use old "rock skis", which are skis you don't worry about the possibilities of hitting rocks with. I worked as a ski instructor in Vermont for several years. The guys I hung with had a saying that really freed me up with possessions....

"All skis are rock skis."

I'm the same way now with other things I love.

"All bikes are riders."

"All knives are users."

Of course, this attitude changes how I buy skis, bikes and knives. I want to own my stuff and not be owned by it.

But this works for me. No right. No wrong.

Carry it!
Like the one poster said, keep one pocket just for the knife. That's works for me.

Well, FWIW, I thought I would let everyone know that I am indeed carrying it and absolutely loving every minute of it. I initially carried it in the front pocket of my jeans in a Bill's custom case. However, after a few hours of that, I took the case out of my pocket and then put the knife right back into my pocket sans case. The case was just too uncomfortable.

I've only had it a short time, and so also used it for the first time to cut up part of my lunch yesterday--a marinated chicken breast.

Thanks to everyone who has provided input!
