Hah!

So this week, I purchased the following:

1 regular sized olive drab combo edge drop point Benchmade griptilian

1 olive drab D2 straight edge drop point mini griptilian

1 columbia river knife and tool (CKRT) m16 EDC

Status:

The big griptilian came somewhat sharp, but not razor

The mini griptilian came SO DULL that I haven't been able to get it to cut paper, even after 300 passes on my sharpmaker

AND THE BEST YET:

My CKRT m16 just arrived from amazon. STRONGEST LOCK IN THE BUSINESS? DAMN STRAIGHT! I flicked the knife open 3 times. On the 4th, the liner lock is stuck above the blade, and the knife won't close.

LAWKS is strong alright, its so strong, you can't close it!

So now I have one kinda dull knife, another knife that won't cut butter, and a razor sharp knife that can't close...

YAY!

UPDATE: loosened the big center screw on the CKRT M16, and got it to close. But unfortunately, when I tighten it all the way so the blade has maximum clearance when closing (and therefore the liner lock in the right position when open) the damn thing is so stiff I can't open it hardly, especially not with the flipper.

Any ideas?

I hope you aren't using the ceramic stones to sharpen D2 steel...You are in for about 1700 more passes, that will barely get you a mini burr going...

Time to upgrade your sharpening system and start carrying a rabbits foot.

I would send them back to the store or manufacturer after contacting them first.
Don't know where you live but shipping cost probably isn't more then €5.

300 passes on a sharpmaker hmm,the crkt is CCC or taiwan bout the same............
Gotta disagree with you there. I have some quality knives that were made in Taiwan. Those from China are usually crap. Not always, but generally they are.

Keep it a bit loose, but not too loose. I overdid the pivot on my M21 and the blade hit a spacer and got dented. Just as long as you don't get lateral play while locked, you should be fine (and preferably no play in the closed position, but sometimes this isn't always possible since it's only supported on two sides versus three in the open).

You will find that liner locks are disliked around here for a reason. I won't own them anymore period. Not even the high end ones like on the military.

my m16 is falling apart too, the opening action feels extremely gritty too as the "ball detent" has been worn down to almost nothing.

Omg.........
I am a firm believer in buying one Very Good knife....(Actually the Grip is a really good knife) And that is exactly what I own. Not saying those are not good.. but use all that cash and get one kick A** knife.
I no longer have these problems. And I stay far away from crkt. Your sharpening will get better. I have sharpended everything from D-2 to SG2 on my ceramics and it was always doable..:)

just a bad week , sh!t happens , no worries just get Spyderco next time if you get "bad" Spyderco then you REALLY need rabbit foot or maybe few of them . :)

If those knives were that bad out of the box, I would look into the return policy where you bought them. I also recommend Spyderco for a razor sharp edge out of the box.

I'm personally moving away from d2 knives due to the difficulty in sharpening. Getting them from Benchmade is extra risky due to BM sharpness issues. Just one of the things I've learned.

This. If you don't like it, do something about it.

Also, poor QC or shoddy workmanship should never be blamed on a buyer's "bad luck". He had the misfortune to buy from companies that allow that junk to be sold, perhaps, but that speaks more about the company than it does about his luck, doesn't it?

Gotta disagree with you. There are a lot of folks on BF who are just fine with a well made linerlock , including me. Emerson , Kershaw , Spyderco to name a few all have some quality linerlock knives. :)

As far the M16 the OP bought , IMO the M16's being made now and in the last few years are not the same quality as the ones CRKT previously made , I think since the auto-lawks came into inception.
The M16 I bought 5-6 years ago was pretty darn nice in every respect , I used the hell out of it then gave it to my co-worker who uses it as his EDC , even see's a lot of use on his ranch. I also have an older M21 that I think is a great knife , other than getting used to the chisel grind which is a thing of preference.

As far your dullish Benchmade goes that's pretty unfortunate , I would be bummed about that , seems with the recent thread that a few Benchmades are missing QC.

My two cents.
