Poor shipping on eBay is my biggest problem... mostly resulting in crushed & crumpled knife boxes. I have never before left negative feedback but this one resulted in my first. With Thanksgiving coming I was happy to add this nice Wild Turkey gold etched 110 to my collection. Look closely at the picture.... that's right.... the seller stabbed the point of the knife into the side of the wooden display box and wedged it against the other. I cannot describe how pissed off I was upon opening this box. My anger is cumulative... I also received a Yellowhorse knife this week that was not wrapped, knife or wood display box. Shipped in an oversized box of course it came open. As the knife and box went separate ways the point of the knife took a small divot out of the edge of the box. I regret not having left negative feedback on that one. At least this knife couldn't shift around as the post office hurried it along its way. Funny thing, I also purchased an air impact wrench this week, something nothing could hurt. It was double boxed, foam padded and shrink wrapped...... go figure.

It is possible that the shipper dropped the box or shook it up and the knife came loose from the velvet lined cut out and the sharp point stabbed the wood as a result. In any case, it was poor packaging on the part of the shipper. I would lodge a complaint.

Damn and the cutout for the knife is built in the box. You think it could have popped out of that cutout while in transit?

Does he have a history of selling knives?

Looking at that photo, I get the impression that he has more of a history of selling estate sale finds and has no idea what a collector is looking for when it comes to the condition of the item or its packaging.

Either way, congrats on the new addition. It really is a nice piece.

Definitely deliberate. The knife was wedged in very tightly. Seller was a pawn shop with an eBay history of (43).
The recess would not hold the knife for shipping anyways, there would still be a need for packing to hold it in the recess.

That's a bummer. I had someone break down the yellow box of a 110 to stuff it into a mailer with the knife. :thumbdn:

I am right there with you Roger. I have received poorly packaged knives on quite a few occasions. I now have a paragraph saved on my desktop that I cut and paste to most sellers once I purchase a knife explaining my concerns and asking them to please wrap the knife by itself and ship it all in a secondary box and not in a shipping envelope and not to put tape on the original box. I have had them tape up the original box with the loose knife inside and tape the shipping label to the box ruining the original box. So far the note has worked for all but one purchase. And when I mentioned it to the seller he went bonkers on me. I even offer to pay additional shipping if needed. Most sellers are very understanding and do a great job when I have sent them the note on shipping.

I think you are in your rights to be very pissed off.

This has happen to me a few times, even with a note like James said...
Yes I did leave them a negative feedback and would do it again...
When I spent a lot of money on a knife or knives maybe not as much
as some of you but I work hard for my money and I'm sure everyone
does too... I want my boxes and knives to come in the mail mint or like
the pictures show them on the bay... If they would just read my notes
and follow my instructions... I would be happy and I would buy from
them again... I send one note with pay pal and one in a email...
I always ask them to PLEASE ship my knife in a box and not a mailer...
Please wrap it good and close the blade and put paper in the box for it
won't bounce around and wreck the Box it came in or the knife... I think
every knife should always be shipped closed... Even if there is a slot for
it... I always tell them that box sometimes means more to me then the
knife... I've offered to paid more for shipping... But do they care or
listen or read my notes... Hell NO... When you spend a $100 - $500 or
more or less and then they just Ship it any old way...
It pisses me off for sure...

:)

Agreed!! And I have had the same problem in the past. I now request that the shipper remove the knife from the display case, close the knife blade (if it is a folder), and individually wrap (in paper, bubble wrap, etc) both the box and knife separately, but ship in the same package. If not, I will consider giving negative feedback for poor packaging; have not had a problem since. Also really aggravates me when a seller simply ships in a padded envelop rather than a box.

The worse case that I ever experienced was a shipper placing a fixed blade (no sheath) in an unpadded envelop. Needless to say, I received an empty envelop; the seller had a history of poor packaging in his feedback and ebay eventually resolved the issue in my favor so it is important to leave appropriate feedback

That is a bummer for sure....

I received a Buck 120 one time that was shipped sans sheath in a manila envelope with bubble wrap. When I opened my mailbox, there was an envelope with a hollow ground, sharp point sticking out of the package.

I am thankful that my USPS carrier was not injured!

Wow Roger sorry to see and hear about your knife issues. If I get a damaged knife that I don't wish to return, I ask for some of my money back as the overall value of the item has been reduced. If they say no, then I leave neg feedback.

Here is a copy of an old post on this subject from me.
Hi Armand,

Here is another photo for this weeks SPS. I just got this one in the mail this week, I can't for the life of me understand why folks think it's ok to ship a folding knife with the blade open!!!!!

Now the velour in the display has been shredded and the knife blade stuck in the wooden display, lifting a chip! I thought this would be a good place to post this as food for thought. When you ship a folding knife close the blade and make darn sure the knife can't move around in the display or package them separately. I have had to many knives shipped to me that were allowed to move around in the display case causing damage, one such knife came from one of our big time Buck knife dealers and the knife broke the unique display case by breaking out the plastic side of the case. Another had the blade break out the plastic side of a display case and the blade was sticking out the side of the box when it was delivered!

Now the collectors knife in the above photo is not worth what I paid for it as the original packaging is now longer as new!

Well I would like to say I feel sorry for you, but since you outbid me on this knife, I can't:) Now don't do it again!! I needed a turkey knife:)

I had to bid three hours before it closed since I was leaving the house but if I had been home to bid at the last minute, you would have paid more or I would be the one mad at the poor shipping. Since it's it is messed up, I will buy it from you, if you promise the ship it properly:)

Desoto, I figured with how many knives you buy you'd be quite familiar with this song and dance, maybe you're mostly lucky buying from people like me who take the extra time to package correctly because I know how frustrating it is to buy a wonderful looking knife only to have it show up with scuffs and broken glass all over it, or stuck in the side of a wooden display. The stuck in the side of a wooden display happens to me at least a couple times a year and usually on older Yellowhorse knives. This year has been better than some for me.

I love when people pad the hell out the outer box or display and just let the knife bounce around inside across the US. I scratch my head and wonder why they felt the need to protect the box and not the knife inside of it:confused::confused::confused:

When I saw this one come to my door I was a little worried.

Worst part is I only bought it because I wanted a display for my pearl 903, look how that turned out:eek:

I could hear these rattling before I opened them, super happy this wasn't worse, hard to come by a set like this

This Buckmaster was purchased new in the box. The guy put it in the sheath, then in the box with no padding and let bounce all the way from TX. This Guy is the only one I left Bad feedback on. He insisted it was the post offices fault and that I still got a great deal getting a NIB Buckmaster for under $400:confused::confused::confused: Does it look like a I got a NIB Buckmaster.

IS there 3 or 4 dings in the blade:D:D:D:D NIB, I was a little pissed

I've always come to believe that my health and well being is the most important. Yeah, I get extremely irritated when a great vintage hard to come by Buck knife gets ruined in the process of shipping, but I just think to my self, it's only a knife. A lot of people don't have homes, some don't have shoes. some have to steal just to eat, some get beat and tortured for no real reason. At the end of the day, We Buck collectors have it pretty good.

I just received yesterday a Buck 110 knife with blade etch in a black limited edition box that I won on the bay. The buyer had $6.99 shipping on the knife which I gladly paid. He paid $4.14 to ship it to me as per the label. When received the limited edition box was just wrapped in paper and taped up with the
label taped to it. The knife and box was received undamaged luckily. I did leave positive feedback but noted it was packaged poorly. Below is the feedback I left as well as his response.

Feedback I left for the seller - Great item - Packaging was nonexistent - Just wrapped in paper. Should be boxed

His response - as you know there is no money to be made in shipping, feebay takes their 10% of shipping 6.50 -.65=5.85 out of 5.85 i have to buy tape, paper drive it 15 miles to town and ship it .please tell me where the profit is .The knife was purchased by me for 89.00 ,so i lost money there plus, feebay took there 10% out of 66.50.the only thing left on feebay is complaining bottom feeders.

I have decided not to respond back. I have found that sellers like this will only escalate with any type of response by me no matter what I say.

I have at least 20 sellers and buyers on my no bid, no buy list that I won't deal with on the auction site.

I even have two on my list from BF. (not from the Buck forum)

Wow you guys are having some tough luck. James that guy from eBay is an idiot. I've sent large fixed blades all taped up with blade protectors and marked fragile only to have USPS use them as a hockey puck. They were literally sticking through the box when the recipient got them.
