OK, time to show you guys where I do my grinding. See attached photo. There are 36 inches of snow on the ground, although it seems like spring is on the way. The coldest day for grinding was +10 degrees F. I do have a small wood heated interior shop, but no ventilation since we are off the grid. I can only grind on sunny day or fire up the generator.

Building a new house with shop that will be on the grid, hopefully by Thanksgiving.

I'm sure someone will have it worse, but I had to whine.

That's not a bad shop- you've got GREAT VENTILATION  :D

I should post a picture of my shop- stupid basement. Cold, damp, too short to stand up all the way...

MSCantrell, I second that! My basement shop doesn't look anything like that. Great view and fresh air are the way to go, even if the air is +10.

Wont get a lot of sympathy from me with that view ! Though i understand well the snow and cold, you've got more on the ground atm than I do. I had to wait weeks to move some stuff into the shop till i could get enough snow cleared / melted to get in the main garage door since it wouldnt go in the new side door i added.

Right now I gotta drive 20 minutes or an hour to forge or work in the snow in a Syracuse driveway. I grind in a basement, all the rest of my shop is in Ithaca an hour away, 2 of my anvils live at one of my student's in his garage 20 minutes away
The no power line thing sucks, but I'm jealous of the view

I like everything about it except for the 36 inches of snow! I'd love to be out in the middle of nowhere, my neighbors aren't bad but they'd be alot better farther away :D

Phil, I grind inside a garage so you have that part worse than me for sure!
Mostly the weather and the wind bother me about my smithery. I live in the middle of nowhere (Page knows) so there are almost no restrictions/complaints about what I do.

Close your eyes and wander into the world of waist deep snow, tarps, and old barn doors. :D

After the snow melts it will be like a pirates chest in there, only instead of gold I will find all of my lost tools :p.

OK, I'll stop whining about my open air grinding shop and enjoy the view. Some of you guys do have it worse than I do. I didn't mention that in the winter I have to drive a snowcat two miles from where I park to the cabin. But it is quiet and not a lot of neighbors!

What's all that white stuff on the ground and your tools? It's kinda cold down here, mid 50s :p I wore a denim long sleeve for part of the day in the shop.

Heck Dan doesn't even have a view, flat depressed looking farmland with scrubby trees (and a ski hill in the distance out of sight of the trees, not even a mountain, just a large hill with lifts) kind of like Iowa but twice as desolate, and about an hour away from the closest real population. I would go batsh#t crazy out there! kinda looked like deliverance with 3 feet of snow when I drove out there.

im in an apartment and move all my tools outside to work. im thinking of finding a storage unit with power and turn it into a shop if its legal :D any ideas if it is

I was hoping JT would pipe up. I almost got hypothermia from our session in your parking lot!

hey yall, well i dont have the most ideal shop either, though i did. i use to have a 10'x18' forging shop. two coke forge, casting forge, gos forge for welding, power hammer, the whole nine. then i had a 14'x21' heated well lit finishing shop that included a bead blaster, surface grinder, band saw, buffer, two drill presses, two work benches, bader belt grinder ect. not bragging but just explaining the severity of my prob. now ive since been seperated and have a little corner in my duplex with a small drill press, bandsaw, and buffer.its about 6'x6' and the only lighting is a little clamp on lamp so i cant work after dark. and my forge shop is a small corner of my porch with a gas forge , anvil and a vice. not so bad but a far cry from what i had. but yet i still feel blessed by the good lord. partly cause i dont have to grind in 3 feet of snow. thanks to all for listening to my rambelings.
