Worst thing you did to a Buck... and did it survive?

Whats the worst abuse you put a Buck through? And did it survive?
I personally haven'. but I have no doubts that they would be fine.
 
On my last camping trip, decided to see if the 105 could be used to split firewood. It worked! Will have to post some pictures that I took.
 
Wasn't really what I would call abuse but a while back I had a 3" buck fixed blade that I carried on a trip to central america. Thought it would make a decent throwing knife. Threw it once at a tree and the tip broke off. I was quite disappointed!
 
Well, sad to say, I abused one terribly about 1962 when I was only 14 or 15 years old. I saved my nickels until I could afford to buy a Buck General. I was dumb enough then to think that $25 could buy a nearly indestructible knife. I was also dumb enough to think that fixed blade knives were for throwing at trees routinely. Wrong on both counts! First the guard loosened and rattled, and then the handle loosened. I ended up rehandling it in fairly crude fashion, but I have to say I didn't damage the blade in all my abusive use of that old Buck General. To put this in perspective, you have to remember that this all took place not long after a good old movie titled The Iron Mistress that was supposedly about Jim Bowie. There was also a television series about Bowie along about that time that I seem to remember, too. A lot of dumb kids ruined a lot of knives as a result of that influence, but some of us learned from it, too. Some of us still have a fondness for Bowies, too! :D

Hey JB -- here you go...

Split several pieces of nice seasoned maple, had to be careful not to hit the handle.



Used a smaller round to hit the back of the blade once the knife was in the log. Paused to take a pic...



Also, one pic of a huge bull moose we saw...


 
well i have a 112 founders edt that was lost on the free way for a while...
has been run over and over and over and (ad nasum) so you get the idear..
scales loose but still opens and shuts great! scars all over it ...
will post pict soon
involved on recovering the picts i took at the fall show in ohio..
that squieel cooked in the wires was the critter responsable for the voltage bleep that did the card in ...
have almost 2/3 of them now!

humm ya know maine-man if'n ya posted the full story;) in my hunt story knife give away ... ???:D
 
I broke the last half inch off of my 110 while pulling up and cutting the old carpet out of the master bedroom. I was surprised how easily it snapped. After that I replaced it with a Lakota Little Hawk, and retired the broken 110 into the toolbox, and later under the seat of the winter beater ford truck. I think its still under that seat, and the old truck is rotting away in the field along with the other dead vehicles that have accumulated over the years.
 
My first Buck was a small folder a Prince? Duke ? The girlfreind/wife snaped the blade trying to open a can of peas.....At that time I did not know about Bucks warrenty and tossed it..........1978-79
 
My wife had to dig out some rows of plants (I think they're called hosta) and it involved cutting the roots in the ground.

So gave her a 119. I was figuring it would be pretty much ruined.

It came back pretty dirty and about as sharp as a shovel.

I cleaned it up and spent and hour or so sharpening it again. It sharpened up real nice.

It's got a few more small scratches, but basically.....none the worse.

Tough knife.

Knife abuse.... well,,, back in my misguided days of splitting the pelvic bone while gutting a deer, I tapped on the back of my 110 blade a few times with a rock.

Sure, it split the bone just fine, But I will always regret the few dings I put in it. I actually cleaned it up some and got many of them out when I retired it into a special drawer in the bedroom so it wouldnt take any abuse from all the other ones here in my eclectic junque room. :D

Interestingly enough, I have two daughters that both want that old 110.
I guess because it is about as old as they are and they have seen it strapped on my belt all those years of huntin and fishin. :D
 
Used my 1978 vintage 110 to chop through a fiberglass tent pole on a backpacking trip. Apparently, my buddy brought one pole not part of the set for his tent. It was about an inch too long, so we took a large rock and banged on the blade until it cut through the pole. He had the rock in hand and the blade positioned, paused and looked at me and asked "Are you sure you want to do this?" I told him I wasn't at all worried, but on the off chance he damaged the knife, I knew Buck would stand behind it. I had just sharpened the blade, so it didn't take all that long. Seriously, you can't even tell this happened if you look at or handle the it. This is why when people ask me what knife to buy, I have but one answer..... :thumbup:
 
I don't think I've ever abused a Buck (or any other knives). The worst thing I've done was cut "skateboard" tape with a 110 and 112 (of the 425CM vintage), and alll that did was make them duller than a butter knife. A little time with some diamond rods and all was well again.

I did a lot of reading about knives in every periodical available in the 1980s when I got started collecting and sharpening seriously. I frequently read articles or letters about people using their knife to pry or as a screwdriver and what would usually happen. I repaired a few knives, including an old Buck 110, in that time period that was abused by trying to open a paint can with the point. I used those cautionary tails as a lesson learned the easy way!
 
The worst thing I ever did was with my folding 112 is I opened a case of C rations in the army. I did that by putting the metal strap into the crook of the folder and stomped on it with my foot. It took two times to cut through the metal band that was wrapped around the case. It didn't hurt the blade very much but put two square divots into the brass part of the knife. Never did that again. Carried that knife three years in the infantry. It really put up with a lot. Still have the knife but its kind of retired. I use it once in a while and see those divots and remember what an idiot I was. :o
