I am excited as all get out. I left work a bit early yesterday, mainly to get home to be with our new kittens. One of my wo-workers sent an email late afternoon, telling me that he signed for a package. I figured it was the usual shipment of books I get from my publisher (I receive their books as they're piblished, as a sort of "standing order" thing). When I got to the office, and retireved the package, it was a USPS Priority Mail box from Tom Clinton (aka, Sharp Stuff). With a business name like that, I wonder what is inside?

Wow. Just, wow. I wasn't expecting this for another year.

Some background.

One of my close friends, who lives in South Africa, gave to me a custom knife in 2003, as a birthday gift. Here it is:

Its handles are made of Gemsbok (South African antelope) horns, and its sheath is made of elephant hide. My name and birthdate are engraved on the blade. A second knife, identical to this, was also made, for my friend. His name and birthdate were engraved on the blade. He commissioned the knives.

Anyway, as a good friend, I wanted to reciprocate. I decided that a Randall Made Knife would be appropriate. I wanted something with a long Amercian history, and Randall fit the bill. If I had ordered it direct, it would have been delivered in 2011. Instead, someone steered me to Tom Clinton, who is a Randall dealer. He told me that it would take close to two years to get, and that he would charge the catalog price at delivery time. Fair enough. That beats waiting five years. I placed the order on 11/02/2006, a little over a year ago. I paid a $100 deposit, $50 for each knife, given that the blades are being engraved.

Anyway, they arrived yesterday, a year ahead of schedule. I'll ship the one for my friend after the holidays, which will give me tme to photograph them together.

BTW, these knives are identical, except for the blade engraving (our names and birthdates). Their specs are as follows:

Model 16 Diver (7" stainless blade, 0.25 inches thick, with full-length tang)
Black Micarta handles w/single finger groove
Wrist thong
Nickel silver single hilt
Wax-impregnated leather sheath

I told my friend that the knives are here, much earlier than expected. He's happy.

Stay tuned for some snapshots...

...fast forward to January 12th:

Cool story Ken!

Your friend has great taste in knives... And the Randall is a great choice too!

Have any pics of this pair together?
A shot of all 4 together would be really cool...
but I'm sure the distance would make that a challenge. :D

Congrats on your early arrivals... can't wait to see them.

.

Awesome story, Ken, and a beautiful blade! Can't wait to see a picture of the Randalls! :D

A girl needs a knife...

A Sharp Stuff box a year early  I'd go buy a lotto ticket:thumbup:

Toms a great guy, I use to deal with him and it was always a pleasure:thumbup:

Sweet blade and story thanks for sharing.

Helle

Very knice Blade Ken!

Look foward to your great pics of the Randalls.

Wow. The handles on that 27 are much nicer than my 26. I love fondling my 26. Use? Nah. I'm a wussy with that. But what an awesome knife to hold.

Thanks!
A GA dealer I know got this for me after I kept telling him I was looking for one with better Stag. He had this one waiting for me under the table at the NKCA show. Nah, I won't ever use mine either, but I do love the stag.

Mmmm... Stag... :thumbup::thumbup:

This Randall Model 1-7" was given to me by my dad.

Wow! Those are very nice Ken, really like the Diver!

Are Randalls still "hammered out" ?

That diver knife is pretty sweet. Randalls are nice and all, but I'd still rather have a Busse. Busse is the new Randall!

Right on. Especially since if you place an order direct with RMK right now, delivery will be in fifty-eight months, in the year 2012. I don't know about you, but Busse Combat's notion of "two weeks" certainly beats fifty-eight months. ;)

My dad bought a total of four Randalls. I got the #1-7" stainless with stag. My brother got a #2-8" stainless with ivorite. My sister got a #5-5" stainless with stag. My ex-BIL got a #8 with carbon steel blade. Of these four knives, my dad disliked the #8 because it stained so easily.

Anyway, here are the three that my brother, sister, and I got:

Shhh. Don't tell my mom and dad that I have a Randall on order for their 50th wedding anniversary, which will be celebrated in August of 2011. It's a #5-6" stainless with stag handle. I ordered it in 2004, and it will be done in early 2008. RMK has been instructed to send it to Rick Bowles for scrimshaw work on the stag handle. The blade is to be engraved as follows:

"Vernon & Jeanne"
"Fifty Golden Years"

Now that is Class! I'm going to start calling you the "Gift Guru".

I WISH I HAD FRIENDS.

But Mike, you do have friends, right here! We're here for you, buddy.

Since I married and moved several times for work, most of my friends are of the cyber-variety too. It's hard to make flesh & blood friends when you're out of school and work 80+ hours a week. One does what one can.
