Would a kool mist system make paper last longer on my disc?

Speed is more your problem that cooling. My disc has a 1725 rpm motor and I usually run it at 30-40%. Also I think a disc would sling water from the cool mist every where.

If loading is your problem, then yes. But for me grinding steel, no.

I grind wet under flood coolant pretty frequently. I do this to manage heat and eliminate the need to lift. But I have not noticed an improvement in belt life when grinding steel. I expect the same will hold true on a disk.

Hmm, well just managing the heat would be worth it. I'll see what YouTube says about the disk throwing water everywhere. Thanks all.

Rhynowet cuts longer than most, but it's Aluminum Oxide paper and steel eats it for lunch. I go through a lot of the 80 grit stuff since I like using the disc as much as possible.

Typically with ceramic belts, we glaze them out quicker than we wear them down, but with the paper that's not typically the case from what I've seen.

Trugrit does have some 9" blaze PSA discs, they cost about the same as belts though which makes them not seem very equitable comparatively. Still if you're wanting to move metal on the disc, and with that high fixed speed, might be worth investing in a few.

I tried some heavier weight course papers of various brands and types I got off ebay for cheap, and had mixed results, but typically it wasn't worth the effort. Would be nice if someone would start selling ceramic abrasive paper.

IMHO, it wouldn't be worth the cost or the mess. ;)

Javan hit the nail on the head... You will be best served by getting some PSA discs that are either black zirconium or ceramic. Those all work best when running fast.

Ideally, you'd save the money from not getting the mister and put it towards a variable speed disc set-up. ;) :)

A recent W2 bowie blade I made, has an 8-1/2" long, 1-5/8" wide blade, and I used 1 sheet of 120X Rhyno, and 1 sheet of 320X Rhyno, and went to hand sanding. :)

The finest ceramic discs I have seen are 220X.

Nice, I'm not quite there as far as sheet economy. My plan is to run a 80 grit with my 2x4 grinder for bevels, then trizact to A30, send for HT and then hopefully do something similar to what you do Nick for finishing.

I'm going to stick with what I have until I have a few more finished knives under my belt. Then maybe go variable speed grinder and disk setup. I'll really appreciate them by then.:D

I bought a Kool Mister specifically for my disk grinder, and I hardly ever grind without it, even when running slow speed.

The spray of coolant is very adjustable, so I don't have a problem with coolant slinging around.

It does keep the paper clean, which seems like half it's effectiveness, IMHO.

I use the heck out of the Kool Mister just between the mill and disk, but I've used it on the band saw and drill press too. I'd probably use it on a belt grinder, but I use a bigger system for that.

It's very easy to move and set up, tied to a magnetic base/flex rod.

I'd hate to be without the little bugger.
