Would a Lansky work better than my Sharpmaker?

I have a Benchmade 910 Stryker that I would like to reduce the edge angle on. It is very sharp but I believe that the edge is obtuse as it has slowed in cutting. It will push cut paper as the paper is thin and moves out of the way but it doesn't cut stiffer material as well as it did.

I had thought of freehanding it on a diamond stone, but being that it is so flat on the edge, there would be no margin for error or inconsistency. Also there would be a lot of steel to remove and it would be very slow to try to maintain the angle throughout the process.

That's why I thought maybe one of those Lanskys that have the settable edge angle might be the ticket.

What think?

I ...think.... I may be getting an answer in another thread.

hmmmm. DMT aligner or Edge Pro.

You may be able to hold one of your diamond hones in a vise or improvise some kind of simple jig, then use it as a kind of one-sided super-Sharpmaker, similar to this:

I like it. Looks handy.

Seriously, that would work and I considered something like that.

However I just got up from freehanding it on a diamond hone and then LIGHTLY stroking the Sharpmaker and I think I have got it.

It is sorta skeery rite now.

But there ARE a lot of ways to rig up something.

There's a lot to be said for freehanding. Only reason I use a rig like this is when I'm wanting to compare or test edge geometry and need to control the edge angle, or for some reason want a really consistent looking edge bevel. For real world use, just cutting some good relief freehand and finishing with an appropriate microbevel gives just as good an edge, IMO. Simple is good.

You might want to look at the DMT magna-ligner instead. Does a much better job and the diafolds can be used without the aligner for free hand sharpening (uses a magnet to hold the diafold stones). A great product! I have the Lansky deluxe with a handful of other stones and have been pretty dissapointed with their diamond stones. They just don't last. Haven't used it since I rec'd the DMT. Your call ...
