Would appreciate a specific recommendation

I am relatively new to the knife world, even though I have carried a knife of some sort for 30 years in my pocket.

I purchased a Delica (not sure of the gen.) it had a plastic clip that broke, I gave it away and got another, all stainless delica with a stainless clip. I carried this for about 8 years, and recently sold it.

I then purchased a Tenacious, which I really liked but found too bulky.

Here's what I'm after; I need to carry tip down, clipped to my pocket (left or right, depends on whether or not I'm carrying a pistol or not) I guess I got used to carrying tip down and having the opening hole close to my thumb and being able to deploy the blade in one fluid movement... having a tip up layout screws me up.

I also need about a 3" blade, and it needs to have good edge retention, I've never sharpened a blade, don't know how and will eventually learn, just not interested now.

I prefer the G10 over plastic or stainless handle.

I like the foliage green delica, calypso 3, and paramilitary in foliage too.

My price range is under 120 samolians, and I seem to favor the traditional lock back system, but not rigidly opposed to others.

I have only gone to one website to compare these three, which are all very close to each other, but I can't figure out if they all are tip down (a must have) and of course I don't know the differences in blade steel.

I think if there was a tenacious that was smaller, and tip down it would be about right, but I don't mind spending more for a US or Japan made knife.

What would your recommendation be from the three above in ergonomics, steel etc... and please suggest others if appropriate since I am not aware of the possibles.

I would carry everyday and use for opening boxes, mail, but mostly for fruit and veg slicing daily.

thanks

Calypso is my favorite knife ever in any of the offerings. I especially like the early G-10 versions.

The Tenacious has a movable clip...you can make it tip down with a small (not sure what size) metric hex key. Mine actually came tip down, but maybe yours was different?

In any case, if you are willing to wait a while, there's apparently a 3/4 sized Tenacious coming out soon, called the Persistence. Should be perfect for your needs.

As far as edge retention, my Tenacious is pretty good, actually. I will tell you, however, that it's best just to learn how to sharpen your knife, then the edge will never be an issue. A lot of people recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker as a fool-proof, easy method of getting your knife hair-popping sharp.

EDIT: I see now that you liked the Tenacious, except for the bulk...so I'm assuming you knew about the movable clip. :foot:

I'm leaning towards the Caly3, I like the clip design (not sure if it is switchable to tip down) and the size appears ideal. Again not sure about ergonomics either...

Yes I liked the Tenacious, and knew about the clip... I don't want to wait since I am not a collector, just need one to use daily and now have only a SAK.

thanks for the input...

Caly3 is tip up cary only if I remember correctly. If you can find a deal on a Paramilitary that would be my suggestion on your list. Otherwise, the Delica in your list is an excellent choice.

Best wishes,

Doug

Fg endura g10.the blade is longer than 3'' I think.I would carry as long a blade as legal.Longer blades work better for food prep etc.If they ever make a Native 4 in something other than CF that might be another option, unless you can afford the CF model.:D

I just pulled the trigger on a delica foliage, plain edge.

Too good a deal to pass up, and I don't think I can go wrong with a Spyderco quality wise.

The G10 delica appears to have a bit more surface area and it's profile is easier to pocket I believe, thanks for the help.

Ohhh. You're going to like that Delica. Good choice. The other Spydercos are great too. :D:thumbup:

Good choice. It is one of my favorite pocket carries.

The G10 D4 loos great! I might pick one up, but there are quite a few others in line before it. So far, the ParaMilitary just may be my favorite working EDC. I greatly prefer liner/frame locks due to the easier used one handedness... the Para is also GREAT! Funny...the Para was recommended to me (here) at LEAST ten times, and I never even considered it because I did not like how it looks ing pics/vids.. once in the hand/pocket, its a whole different ball game... what a piece of work! Otherwise, I would consider the UKPK or even an Urban... no lock... pure simplicity. beautiful.

This is how I feel with all my Spydercos. I think they all look butt ugly but I eventually give in and order it. Once it's in my hands being used, I absolutely love it. The exception is the UKPK and Caly 3, I thought those knives were very attractive from the beginning.

Hurry up and grab a 99.95 D2 Paramilitary while they're still here. Seems like its what you're lookign for, good edge retention, nice lock, tip down. Such a great blade :) Very nice addition to your delica.

do you mean Micarta? No Calypso exists w/ G10 though the Caly 3 which is a more recent release does. I reco it to the OP and anyone else who likes to cut things as it is a perfect sized matter separator.

Aren't they coming out with a smaller version of the Tenacious? Might be what you're looking for.
