would bb/pellet gun be worth carrying?

Canadian gun laws dictate that anything over 500 fps is classified a firearm, so many of the air guns are throttled back such as the dinky little Crossman that I had. Still killed them deader than a door nail though. I'll try to u/l a pic.

Yes, they are, i have a Weirauch HW 90 in .25 caliber. This very "powerfull" gun is capable of generating 36 Joule. It is good for taking small game, and you should be easy to fill your dinnerplate with it. You can get airguns that have 70 Joule, this is about the same energy as the .25 acp!
Squirrel and rabbit , you shold have no problem getting a full meal with it. Although .22 LR is a better choice, the airgun is silent, and a lot better to explain then a firearm. Most people will treat it as a toy, and don't see it as a threat. Another fact is that it will cause less meat damage , so here is more to eat.
I would go for a Magnum Springer in a large caliber (.22 and .25). Although not as fast as a .177 they have a larger diameter and they don't overpenetrate. Don't go into supersonic speeds in a .177. It will have no benefits and the pellet becomes eratic once reaching supersonic speeds.
If you use a hollow point bullet like the Crow Magnum you should be able to shoot your quarry with ease.

Yeah, wouldn't want all the serfs walking around with full-power airguns. They might get together and decide to revolt!

In a survival situation an air rifle will collect all types of edibles.I purchased a henry us survival .22 to carry in my backpack it's lighter and more compact than most any air gun at least the more powerful ones and of course it has far greater range and energy maybe i will get used to the trigger before a survival situation occurs!

Well, except anything weighing more than a few pounds, or beyond relatively close range, that is.

When discussed in the "survival" sense, I figure air guns make more sense for a very long term scenario where you're out of gunpowder/fixed ammuntion. I don't think of them as very useful in the kind of scenario where you're wandering around the woods starving to death, looking for something to shoot & eat.

I haven't shot air guns since I was a kid, so forgive me if I'm missing something here. From the posts so far, it sounds like a slingshot might be a better SHTF option. I'm not trolling for an argument or belittling air guns, but a slingshot would be lighter and you'd never run out of ammo. It would fit inside a kit or BOB, and is more easily repaired in the field. All of which makes it a better close range option in a survival theatre. Of course, if one were injured it would probably be easier and more accurate to use an air gun. At least until you had to pump it....
