Would I be a monster if I used this knife?

Carry and use it, maybe get a pouch to carry it in. If you are really worried about it carry a second knife for any dirty jobs.

Don't keep that thing hidden from the world. It was made to be used and enjoyed!

Thank you, good people.
You've nudged me in the direction I was hoping for.
Excellent! You've fallen into the trap. Now all of our pristine, unused knives like that just went up a little bit in value, because we convinced you to use yours! Muahaha!

Hahahaha! Asking a bunch of knife addicts like us if a knife should be carried. :-)

I say carry it.... IF it is one you think could be -the- knife. But if it is just going to be another passing fancy? Then I'd say shelve it. No need to produce yet another one of those infamous "lightly used" knives. I have half a dozen mint Case knives like that that will never get carried because I just don't see a grail knife in the bunch.

Besides I've already got the grail knife in my pocket.

You paid for the knife and that gives you the right to decide what to do with it. It is a straight XX and in nice condition, getting harder to find, but, not rare.

The dilemma I see is that you only have the one old pristine Case and if you lose it, you have none.

I have quite a few of these old Case knives and I carry one of them in my watch pocket often. I used to want for these knives from the time I was a young boy in the 1960's, wishing for a real nice bone Case XX at the local hardware store. I know from my past history that it is unlikely that I will lose it.

So I would suggest that if you have a history of not losing knives, it is unlikely you would lose it. For me, having an old XX in my pocket is just a special feeling that is different from my other knives. I always carry a second knife, usually not old or special, for any of the heavier duty cutting chores.:)

A knife that is not used is an unhappy knife. They are tools that live for service. The quote "One is glad to be of service" Andrew Martin rings true for a knife. Be careful with it, don't open paint cans lol but do use it. Otherwise it won't sing, like a violin in a museum it won't be able to sing till you let it out.

Use it, you only live once and you bought it to enjoy it. Unless you enjoy looking at it than use it. It's not some priceless one of a kind piece of art for a museum these things were made to be used not admired like the Mona Lisa.

SubSpace,
You have a TERRIFIC FOLDER, it will only get better after you've carried it for a few years.
When You use it You will be glad it was in Your pocket.
You could buy a pocket sheath. If You put it in Your watch pocket remember to take it out before throwing Your jeans in the wash.

You gotta do what you feel, and I think you wanna carry it. Knives were made to be used then (as many still are) and they deserve to fill that role.

That's a great specimen. The 087 is a terrific pattern
I've been addicted to the old Case red bone for quite some time. While mine is certainly not as pristine as yours, it has been in my pocket a lot.
As others mentioned, you can use it, enjoy it, and still keep it nice. Plus, the satisfaction of taking it out of your pocket and admiring its beauty, is very enjoyable....

Use it. That knife has been waiting and wanting to be used for so long...how could you say no? Slide it into your pocket and don't look back.

Use it. If you think you'll feel guilty about it, buy another, and preserve one of them.

If it were in bad shape, or extremely rare - I'd recommend against it. But as it is, it's a well made tool. Nothing suits a tool better than using it for the purpose it was designed.
