I'm considering doing some custom work to my Perrin, replacing the kraton inserts with exotic wood and mosaic pin. Can anyone tell me whether or not the kraton inserts are simple inserts or do they go through the tang itself? I don't want to begin this project unless I know more about the knife's handle construction. Thanks.

Hi Nobody. The Kraton is injected into the FRN, but does not touch the tang. You could probably scrape the kraton out. be sure to post a pic of the final piece.

Thank you very much for the Mr. Glesser. Is the tang present under the FRN under the Kraton?

Nobody,
I finally got my own Perrin. :) Thanks for the recommendation. Did you ever do the mod you mentioned here?? Just wondering.

Glad you got one and like it so much. I'm still super happy with mine. Love that VG10!

Sometimes it takes me a while to get back here. Sadly, I have not yet performed my modification on my Perrin. It's in my plans but other projects have had to take precedence. :(
I'll definitely post whenever I get around too it.

I also want to get another Perrin just in case things go horribly wrong with my modification. I've kind of been waiting for an inexpensive user to come along in the for sale forums to which I can make my mods..

I'd be real interested in knowing what the tang looked like in the handle if your customization reveals that. Is it a straight metal stick tang with notches or does in widen back out somewhat behind the choil to conform to the shape of the handle. I'd rather have that info before trying customizations. :D

Finally got the handle off the Perrin. What a PITA. It had to be cut off, but just kept melting and making a mess. The tang is about 2 1/2" long and 3/8" wide. There is one 1/8" hole in it. It is going to be too narrow to put bolts in (1/4" hole rquired). I am thinking 2 rows of 4 stainless pins (upper and lower). Three of them will be through the tang, 5 just holding the Micarta together. With the sides epoxied together and the tang bedded, the 8 pins will give good strength and look nice with the black Micarta. Any better ideas?

I would go for a block of micarta instead of scales. Drill out a hole and make it the size of the tang...If you´ll have problemas doing that (Has to fit 100% to look good) then make a front plate that fits the tang and put that on first. Epoxy the components together and cut out the shape you want. Reason for this is that the tang was made for this kind of making and not for scales (It´s short too). But the way you are going to do it will work too.

ok, the knife is in its final stages, so once blademan sends it back to me after finishing, I'll show you guys what's been done... I'm as excited as you!

Are you going to take Fred Perrin up on his offer for the "kiss on the mouth" for anyone whe manages to disengage the tang from the handle? :p
Interested in pix as well.
