I would like to purchase either a one-hand opener or fixed blade knife that can easily be carried around with me and be able to with-stand lots of use. I am looking to get something that will last me quite a while, but still be affordable...(100$ or under canadian) i would appreciate any suggestions that anyone has on which knife to purchase. Thanks in advance, Namrepus...

But what does Superman need a knife for!?

Ah, well, let me start off the suggestions with the Benchmade GRIPTILIAN.

There are also variants with partially serrated blades, a modified drop point with thumbstud instead of opening oval, and mini-Griptilians with different colored handles.

Look for a Spyderco folding knife under www.lebaron.ca
You should be able to get a 4" Endura (lightweight) at around 72 bucks plus 3 shipping and delivery and put the tax on top of that would be about 90.
If you want to know the shipping, ask them first.

Esav: Griptillian would definately be over 100CDN even at a discount place.
Oh yeah, Welcome to Bladeforums.
I'm from Vancouver ;)

Thx man, I'm from winnipeg... I checked out the griptillian, but like calyth said, that's gonna b over 100$ cdn, and im pretty broke right now, so i'll hold off on that one, but im lookin through lebaron right now, and it seems to have some nice knives at reasonable prices, thx for the help guys!!

Go for a Gerber AR 3.00, it's served by well for three years, and it should even be affordable in the poor old Canada.;)

looks like a nice knife as well, it'll come out to almost 100$ CDN, so i'll check into that too! thx m8!!

I have a Spyderco Native serrated edge that performs general purposes tasks perfectly (I carried all days for 2 years and is still in very good condtion)

The Native is small enough to take it anywhere without getting people raising eyebrows and with enough "power" to get major cutting jobs done in seconds.

It also has a Zytel handle so it's' very lightweight and the clip is easily removable (can be placed to please either right handed or left handed users )

Can be aquired for something near $50 US so I guess it would be something less than $100 canadians (dont know the conversion rate and I'm too lazy to go to xe.com now ;-) )

bye! :-)

Nestor

Editing to PS: still carry it everyday :-O

Wow, you guys get killed on the conversion, don't you? I'm afraid to look ...

You probably will end up with a fine knife, anyway. Gerber always made a good product. Benchmade might cost too much. Spydercos are really durable.

Good luck!

yeah, the conversion really sux :( 1$ CDN is like 1.50$ US!! :( but thx for all the help guys! :D u guys really reply fast, too!!!

CRKT Crawford/Kasper Fighting Folder's a good one ~$40 US

Camillus EDC although at ~$50 US it might be overbudget

And for a fixed, the Camillus CUDA Arclite neck knife at ~$25 US

It sounds like a small neck knife is just what you need. A Little Pecker knife by Newt Livesay would be good. If you want stainless steel, the Camillus Arclite would work. Both in the $20-30 US range.

namrepus,
since everybody else recommended folders, i thought i'd take a stab at recommending a few fixed blades. there's huge variety of fixed blades available (size, wieght, blade shape and sheath design can have a big effect on what you personally would consider easy to carry and use). i'm no expert on the exchange rate, so i'll just throw out a few knives that are around $50USD or under.

cold steel makes several mid size knives with kraton rubber grips and decent blade steels. The Master Hunter (@$50.00), All Terrain Hunter (@$25.00) and Pendelton Hunter (@$30.00-$50.00) would probably srve you well. here's a link:

The Columbia River Big sky hunters are about $35.00 and have impressed me as a good bargain (the sheaths are quite nice for the price range). here's a link:

The Becker Combat/Utility is kinda big, but considered a "Best Buy" on the forums. here's a link:

Finally, i would whole heartedly recommend the swedish "mora" knives from Frosts and Eriksson. they're very inexpensive (as low as $8.00) but they cut great and are very easy to sharpen. the basic mora knife is pretty no frills (wood handle, no real finger guard), but for a few dollars more you can get into one of the models with a molded plastic handle that provides better grip and finger protection...my personal favorite is the Eriksson Mora 2000...definitely a best buy for $26.00. sorry all of these links are to US sites, but these are all pretty common knives, so you should be able to find canadian retailers.

good luck and watch out...knives can be addictive :) ,

wow! thanks for the long post gearGOON, i will be sure to go lookin around locally for some of those! and i was also wondering, wut do u guys think of the CKRT Stiff KISS? i like the fact that it's one solid peace of metal... but i really dont know much about it, seems to b a nice blade from wut ive seen... and the camillus CUDA looked like a nice knife, too, but i havn't seen many camillus knives sold locally, o well, guess i gotta look harder!

EDIT: i also wanted to ask, which of these one-hand openers am i capable of flicking open?

namrepus,

i haven't tried all of the knives that people have recommended here, but my favorite knife for "flicking" open is my benchmade osborne 940, it has the "Axis Lock"...the same locking system as the Griptilian. the axis lock works a little differently than the standard liner lock, so it seems to be particularly good for the "flick" open. i'm not sure i'd recommend flicking all the time, but it is fun :) anyway, you might also check out the kershaw knives designed by Ken Onion...they have a sort of spring assist opening system that makes them feel almost like an automatic (aka switchblade). not sure how the law in canada would catagorize them. here's a link to some kershaws:

Wow, those knives look cool, are u sure they're legal in canada, tho? cuz i dont wanna get fined @ the post office :D

If they're illegal, you won't be fined, they'll be held by customs and tell you whether you want to contest, try to send back (if avail.) or let them have it to destroy.
The law is complicated and IMO a piece of s*** (search "custom balison" under the knife community - canadian connection for further information) but basically it says no butterflys, no automatics, and no gravity knifes or flickable by a single wave motion (not a rebound). That's a simple way to test things.
The stiff kiss looks pretty good and I wanted a drop point one, however the sheath from CRKT sucks (ask Normark on the forums for a good kydex sheath)
The Crawford Kasper runs dangerously with the last rule (the single motion flick). A couple of motions may eventually open the knife, therefore I don't suggest it.
I ordered the Endura like 2 weeks ago and arrives safely. It's not going to be wave open unless you do 2 motions and that's not what the cops are testing for.
The Cuda (EDC and the Arclite) are hailed excellent in here. I have no experience but I wish for the EDC.
Someone in here suggested fixed blade. Well if you're behaving good all the time, then you don't have to really worry about it, but Canadian Criminal Code specifically said that any knife that's not in plain view would be considered conceal weapon regardless it's purpose (paraphrase) and a cop could book you in for that. I clip my knifes to the pocket, and that's enough to be constitute as plain view, and the cops are really look for trouble makers. If you're the average joe they won't really bother you with it. Never say it's for SD though or it would be seized.
Hope this will help you on your selection, and BTW you're already infected with the knife bug, big time! :D

aha, thx man,a nd i kno im infected, i hav been since i was like 5 years old and my dad gave me an old shrade uncle henry (dont kno if it was too smart givin a 5 year old a 5" blade knife, :P) but ever since then i have been obsessed, my only problem is i always seem to buy low-quality knives and dont end up using them! now i've just decided to buy high qualitly knives and buy one knife every few years... :P kind of tone it down... to date i hav about 20 knives but they're ****! thats y i wanna make sure from all the finatics here that i'm getting a good blade :)
