I would love to see anyone's home made buck saws!

Also, I need a location to buy a half dozen good buck saw blades (what are the good ones? What should I look for).

Plans for making buck saws would also be great. I have been needing a project for the man cave (the Survival Garage) and this would be a blast.

I will also be sure to post up my results.

I do believe Lee Valley tools has a book of pioneer tools, and how to make them....not sure about the blades though...

Hey Tal, I can chime in on this. I've made a CUTE little craft bucksaw before that has a hacksaw blade on it. I may be able to find some plans, but once you see the picture its pretty self explanatory. Now I just have to find it.

Don't have it on this comp right now. That sounds about par for the course huh? Send me a message tomo and I'll see if I can wrangle it up.

I'd like to see plans too. I've been turned off of pruning saws because no matter how careful I am, I always seem to bend the crap out of the blades.

How easy is it to make an emergency one in the bush if you only carry the blade?

TF-
Here is a video I made a while ago demonstrating my saw. It is pretty clear in the video how it was made. I used a bandsaw and a drill press for just about everything on it, then gave it a coat of linseed oil just for good measure.

Shotgun-It is not easy at all, at least for me! I have tried a few times, and I always end up with a poor saw in the end.

By the way, I found that when I really amped up the tension on the saw, I broke several paracord tension cords on the top. I went to a 3/4" nylon webbing and haven't broken it yet, despite getting a ridiculous amount of tension on the blade.

I really like the blade tight, which is the main reason I ended up building my own saw...The steel frame saws I've used really don't put enough tension on the blade-they have too much flex in them.

That's a nice saw. I like the grips a lot.

TF-Yes! I was shocked the first time I did it, and even more shocked the second time. The first time was due to a small frayed area on the cord, but the second time I think I just overloaded it. You can really get alot of tension into those basic windlass style saws.

Gotta be careful.. Found out the other day that some of this supposed 550 paracord is more like 250 paracord.. Are you sure it was actual 550 ??

It may have been the twisting that's put on it that makes it fail. I know you lose strength with every knot you put in a line. Maybe something similar happened because of the twist?

I've had good luck with Bahco/Sandvik blades. They are available from www.tools-plus.com but I've never dealt with that outfit so I can't recommend them. Other places also stock them.

I read somewhere that with modern blades you actually get poorer performance with the old tooth & raker design. Anyone know whether or not that is true?

I can get 24" bucksaw blades pretty reasonably. They are for a Alu. pack bucksaw. Not sure what the ends look like. If you want more info email me.

not sure about the blades though...
Don't know where you are but here construction material retailer carry bow saw blades that are fully functionnal. Brands like Bahco/Sandvick are ready available, very functionnal and low priced.
Bow saws are among the rare tools you can get a perfectly functionnal tool at a low price from almost any construction store.
