Would love to get feedback from you guys regarding some test stonewash finishes...

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys!

I left the test blade (it's made from A2) out on the cutting board last night with a chunk of tomato guts sitting on it to see what would happen. I know from experience that doing that is a good way to get some nasty rust on steels like O1.

Thankfully there was no rust! It did add a darker patina to a section of the blade though, so I think a darker finish like #2 is probably what's needed (the blade was tested with the #1 finish).

It's almost impossible to judge just from a picture, and it's near folly to try to get a grip on how customers feel about these things from a poll in a forum. If the thread stays active long enough and gets enough responses, I can almost guarantee there will be no clear "winner". Opinions are like belly-buttons...

Having said that, #2 looks really nice from here.

I'm not surprised that Aaron is doing corrosion testing, because he's really anal about stuff like that.

And that's what it's gonna boil down to... what works, what's efficient, and what looks good.

I wanted to get an idea of what people like in a stonewash, #2 seems to be the overwhelming winner so far. I'm unlikely to decide anything based solely on the preferences of others, but feedback definitely plays an important part in my overall choices.

The whole picture will change anyway once that blade gets a handle. The grey vinegar stonewashes may not go at all well with black G10, or they may look better than the darker stonewashes, who know at this point!

The stonewashes overall are something I'm still a little unsure about, so I'm trying to make sure I hear what people think before committing one way or another...

I like #2. It looks like it would be more non-scratch, which I like, as I hate scratches on the blade.

At first, I liked #2. When I zoomed, the color looks a bit splotchy. Seems like scratches would show up more against the darker patches.
I vote for #4, with a longer turn with the coarse media. The fine media gives a nice base color/background with the vinegar, but the coarse is what makes the stonewashing.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I have been continuing to do corrosion testing and so on with the different finishes. Interestingly #2 rusted a bit while in use in the kitchen, whereas #1 did not. I think the Ferric Chloride etches must leave deeper micro-pitting than the vinegar (as evidenced by the darker color I guess). #2 also showed wear a fair bit more than #1 did. I'm still investigating all the options...
