Would there be "end-of-days" 3rd Generation knives?

Was looking at this C641 which recently sold on ebay. Any ideas as to why it would only have one scrolled bolster? End-of-days? Repair? Other thoughts?

Thanks,

DAve

Dave, is this the knife ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250309450925&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=015.

i bought it out of curiosity. look at pic of backside. it's been apart; handle pins are dinged, not "factory", and pivot pin is not factory either.
not a real "pro" job either, so i think it is a C641 that someone has modified.
i have 2 C641 knives, both unused, as comparison.
don't have the knife yet, so i still have to see if my picture interpretation is correct.

Roland,
Yeah, that's the one. I evidently forgot to add the link in my post. I was curious about it. I have 2 of them myself, but this one caught my eye. My computer monitor resolution must not be set as high as yours, cuz I still don't see the dings you are talking about. Might be time to change things!

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, compare the handle pins and pivot pin on your 2 C641 knives to the pics provided in the ebay listing. are you sure you don't see a difference ?

If that knife has been modified, then someone must have done the engraving on the bolster after it left the factory. There is no way I know of (factory or repair shop) to re-set that pivot pin without messing up that engraved bolster. Even the factory production machine that sets the pivot pin when the knife is assembled, would mess up the engraving.

It takes a great deal of force to set a pivot pin. The larger the pin, the more force required. At the factory they come out with the pin mashed down with a crosshatched pattern on the pin, except on the smaller knives like the LB1. The excess is then ground down along with the oversized bolster & the oversized handle. Essentially the bolster & handle is hafted at this point. Also the handle, liners & backsprings are ground out even at this point.

Keep in mind that with Schrade this is not true of the patterns with a Swinden Key. It is true only on the patterns that have the pin through the bolster.

I have finished a number of knives that came from the Camillus factory that were at this stage of the production process when they shut down. Remind me in a week or so, when my hand is healed, (it is getting better, thanks), and I will take pics and describe the process a bit better. It is really quite revealing when you look at it. The hafting process covers a multitude of sins.

Dale, v. interesting.
the pic of backside of knife shows the pivot pin clearly, whereas on my other 2 C641 knives it is same silver color as bolster and not that visible. also pivot in ebay knife looks like it might be a slot screw ??
the handle pins look like they have been marked with a punch, again, not so with my 2 knives in which pin surface is perfectly smooth.
so are you suggesting this is a Schrade factory knife that was not finished ?
roland

i will post better pics. when i have this knife.
if it is factory, most likely there are others.

here is the C641 with engraved bolsters as it arrived:

what i thought were dings on the handle pins were spots of tarnishing.
the wood handle slabs are a dull brown, not the shiny red/brown of my other 2 C641s. i think they are walnut. there is no 3rd Gen blade etch.
cleaned and compared with 2 "regular" C641s:

i was wrong. it probably has not been apart. probably an Ellenville Schrade product as Dale said. BUT, has anyone ever seen another ?

Roland,
Looks like a nice knife. Thanks for the pics, and no, I've never seen another like it.

Is the pattern of scrolling on the C641 of Rolands the same as on an SCM5? On the SCM5 did they scroll the back bolsters too? I always wanted an SM5, but they are uncommon and pricey. I think you're right Roland, it looks like Walnut. Nice knife.

Don't know yet, but should be able to tell you in a couple days when thos one arrives in the mail and I can compare to Roland's pics. I think I got lucky on this one. I've never seen one go for under $100, so was surprised I won this one.

Good job Dave! well done, very nice pick up for the price, makes you feel good when you win something like that which would normally sell for much higher.

Yeah, I've had a couple instances of that lately. Two LB7s, one a Harley-Davidson, the other a special engraving for a U.S. Capitol Police Officer, for about $15 each, and a nice 152OT scrim for $26. But alas, the C628 I've been after for quite some time still eludes me. THe one last niight went for $71. If we ever get the swap/sell thing going, it's going to be the first thing I put out an APB for.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Roland! And yeah, pretty sure that's walnut on your C641.
