Would this be an acceptable topic for this forum?

I don't know about everyone, but I'm not so short sighted that I believe that a Buck is the only acceptable knife to own and carry. I probably have 20 Bucks for every knife of another brand, but there are some others that I like and enjoy carrying once in awhile.

Do you think a thread showing our "off brand" that we carry once in a while, perhaps along side a similar Buck (because this is the Buck sub forum) would be OK here and not offend anyone? Or should such a topic be limited to the General forum?

I'd like a mods input also. I'd not want to get a "ticket" for starting a topic such as that.

This is something generally left up to the forum mod's discretion. In most cases, the forum mods determine how far off-topic they want to let a thread go. For example, in the Busse forum you'll see "what folder do you carry with Busse" threads. I think you would be fine starting a thread like you mentioned provided there was some Buck content and based on the subject of the thread you'd like to start, there would be. Nothing wrong with having a little fun sometimes right? :)

Seems like a fun topic to me...and it's been done in other sub forums. Variety is the spice of life, and I enjoy trying out different models. It's nice to be familiar with various models that get discussed in the General forum, so I sample as much as I can. My current edc rotation.

I have posted this before to show the Craftsman folding hunters with a Buck 110.

"Nothing wrong with having a little fun sometimes right?"

Thanks Jason. As long as I don't get a bunch of flak from other members, I'll keep it going. If there's too much objection, I'll lock it down.

Thanks also to Tony and Ed for their contributions. Nice pictures.

Here's a couple of mine. While the Kershaw Splinter/Quince isn't a ringer for the Odyssey, they have a similar shape and they're both linerlocks. I was particularly drawn to the Quince handles on the Kershaw, and I'm fond of carrying it occasionally (along with my trusty 301).

Plumberdv,

Great thread, if I had a good camera and some skills, I would join it too! I like the Buck and Kershaw.

My two cents. If there is a BUCK in the photo, why not! I mean I have a few other brands beside BUCK that I do like but usually have my Alpha Hunter on my belt.

My lucky, early history (pre-selector), all in one lightweight hunting knife. In pack was 422 and 118. Some of you likely remember story of dressing a cow elk on the mountain and sticking the knife in the ground. Only to walk away and leave it too long of a trip back from the truck. Two winters pass and hunting takes me back to the spot and there stands the SAK proud but a little faded on the sunny side. I wonder what scenes it saw.......thats the lucky part. Buck is 319 with replaced stag scales. Wish the spey blade was a sheepsfoot to go with the leather awl.......300

This one was its buddy that climbed back in the pack for the walk out. I was the butcher and buddy and son made the two hikes out with meat. We had rolled the cow over and was cutting meat away from the SAK.

Thanks for contributing Craig, that's a good story.

By the way, those are very cool fern fossils that you used to prop up the knives with!

I'll keep it going by posting my last one. I love the 532 and my Case Copperlock reminds me of them. I wish Buck could find it in their hearts to offer perhaps a Limited Edition 532 with a wharncliffe blade like that.

Opinels.

In some ways, they are like the French Buck, or Buck folders are the American Opinel. Tough simple locking folders that are undeniably associated with workers and sportsman and that are recognized and copied the world around. Both are tough as nails and both have rich traditions of being customized by owners and artisans.

In other ways, Opinels are like the anti-Buck. They are almost unusable out of the box. The blades need to be polished out, the joint and lock need to be tuned. There is no life-time warranty and no spa treatment other than your work bench.

Two knives I like to carry besides a Buck are a Schatt and Morgan File and Wire Mountainman and a Moore Maker Mountainman in stag (which I believe is made by Queen Cutlery). Both American made and both quality folders. Especially fond of the S&M!

Sorry, photographically challenged.

I use to carry a non buck, it was a Spyderco Lum carbon fiber folder. I realy liked it but every time I put in my pocket I felt like I was cheating, so I sold it and I am a faithful Buck user and collector...

Now all i carry is an old Schrade contract 303 and a Vantage select with custom carbon fiber scales.

I love both of those.

Here's my two cents worth. Like a lot of others, I collect some knives other than Bucks (Gerber fixed blades from the 60's and 70's). If we are going to do this, I think that posts should compare different knives and give specific advantages or disadvantages of one versus the other. Just posting pictures doesn't seem to serve much purpose.

As for 300Bucks, "Some of you likely remember story of dressing a cow elk on the mountain and sticking the knife in the ground. Only to walk away and leave it too long of a trip back from the truck. Two winters pass and hunting takes me back to the spot and there stands the SAK proud but a little faded on the sunny side.". tThis doesn't top him, but it may be close. About 45 years ago, I was doing a project above treeline in Wyoming. My wife came with me one day and dropped a contact lens. Since we didn't have much money, we spent a fair amount of time looking for it, but had no success. The next day I went back and the wind was about the same. I stood in what I thought was the same spot, dropped a blade of grass, watched it fall and looked down. The contact lens was found. As a friend often told me, "It's better to be lucky than smart." Here is a challenge for 300Bucks. In 1969, I was in the Wind Rivers on a fishing trip. On the way out we stopped for a minute, I took my glasses off and set them on a rock. Two or three miles later I noticed they were missing. Here is the challenge 300Bucks, go find those glasses. I can tell you where they are, give or take four or five miles. If you find them, there is a $100 reward for glasses that don't work for me anymore.

bert,

We better just leave it alone, they likely slid off the rock and a light shower placed a big drop of water in the center of one lens.
The sun shining thru them was like a magnifying glass and started a forest fire. We will just leave well enough alone and save the government the cost of court action to recover fire costs. There were likely pecked to death by a Clark's Nutcracker anyway.......

I have a few TL-29s, I sometimes carry an old Schrade if I think I may be stripping some wire or prying on some small engine part. Carried by many service men. Carbon steel blades, screwdriver blade locks open. 80ish Camillus shown. I wouldn't want to use my first generation 307 to pry on something and break the tip.

OK.

I posted pics of some of my Opinels and I'll compare them to the Buck lock backs I own, adding some more comments to the differences I already mentioned in that post.

Technically, I find the Opinels to out perform my Bucks rather consistently. The convex grind on their blades is just amazing when it comes to cutting through wood. Whether its goofing around carving and whittling or cutting brush when doing yard work, the Opinels just simply cut better and I'm convinced it's the grind.

I find the Opinels tougher in terms of the integrity of the joint. The way the lock ring engages pretty much guarantees that when you engage the lock ring, any play in the joint is stabilized. Several of my Bucks have developed some amount of play here and there and that's just a non-issue with my Opinels. I should mention that I tend to use my Opinels harder than my Bucks, especially doing yard work. They're cheap knives and I use them like I don't like them but they just don't bust. After several years of beating on them, I've come to respect the Opinel and it's a respect that been really earned.

The big thing the Opinels fail at is that they aren't Bucks. Buck and Ulster/Schrade are knife brands that are riveted to my soul. They were both a big part of my growing up and (with Buck) my adulthood. At hunting camp, you carried a Buck, end of discussion.

I should say that not all Bucks are Bucks to my eyes. The core of Buck for me is the 110/112, particularly the frame. The newer models that don't maintain those lines look foreign to me. Nice knives, I'm sure, but Kershaw and CRKT make nice knives too and I'm not much more interested in the new Bucks than I am in the Kershaws. Not that they aren't nice and not that people shouldn't buy them. I'm speaking here entirely for me and why I carry what I carry. For me, the Buck I carry has to be somehow linked to memory of the first 110 I purchased in the 70s. The lines have to be there, the locking mechanism needs to be there. The Ecolites provide that for me, even when reblade with a drop point.

In the same vein, this to me is the biggest distinction between my Opinels and my Bucks. The Opinels are great knives but it's sort of like getting great French cooking. Good French cooking is great, but it's not the same as home cooking. My Bucks are more like home cooking for me (ditto Old Timers).

Pinnah,

Well-written. Good use of paragraphing. A joy to read your words. Have you authored something longer, novel for example, that I could read?

When first born son married gifts of garden Opinels were given to the males, with lanyards by myself. They were new and could only be obtained out of Paris back then. All recipients still own & enjoy these locking folders.
