Would this be covered under warranty?

I had that happen with one of my old natives, luckily I bought it from wal-mart while they still had them and I just walked in and got another one.

I would try and re-work the FRN, if nothing else it would be a fun project.

I hope Spyderco will work with me on this. I think getting a clip caught is something that will always happen with normal use. If it cant stand up to it than it shouldnt have a clip.

Unfortunately i did the same thing to my black handled pacific salt. I bought it, and continue to love it, because it is so lightweight, simple, and maintenance free. As with everything in life however, these qualities come at a cost, mainly that there is nothing to reinforce the clip other than FRN, which inherently can not be as sturdy as steel. (well the clip is titanium now, i think, but mine was the first version with steel ;)). I seem to think that it broke when i snagged the clip on a seatbelt (entirely my fault). I lived with the wobbly clip for a while, but wound up just gorilla gluing it back into place and i haven't looked back. Its not the prettiest solution in the world, but it allows this knife to keep on doing what it does best, work exceedingly well. Additionally, after 1 application of the gorilla glue, the clip hasn't so much as wiggled despite being wet, cold, hot, dropped, and generally abused. I don't know whether the gorilla glue or the Spyderco is tougher, but its a manlier man than I who can figure that out.

I respectfully disagree.

A clip is intended to (but not guaranteed to) retain a knife in the pocket...period.

I think we can agree that some outside force acted on the knife and was significant enough to damage it. Not only did the clip succeed 100% in preventing you from loosing the knife, it obviously did so under conditions beyond the design of the fastening method!

I talked to a guy that felt that if the clip fails to retain the knife in the pocket (and the knife gets lost) it should be covered (replaced) under warranty. I disagreed with his opinion also.

I am not going to discourage you from trying to contact Spyderco, but I do not understand why you are making this a public spectacle. I wish you the best and I sincerely hope Spyderco does work with you on this. I have contacted them a few times on the website and have always promptly received an automated email response directing me to send the knife in for them to inspect.

I'm not trying to make any kind of "spectacle" of anything. If they tell me tough luck then I'll deal with it. It seems others have had this problem too and I would like to know if it will be covered...whats wrong with that? I've never had anything like this happen with any of my folders so why is it too much to think a failure like that shouldnt happen?

Others in the thread have also expressed it might not be a bad idea to somehow reinforce the clip area.

I'm just able to get on this now because I got really busy with school and life. I now have time to deal with it (semester just ended) and I'm trying too. I have a number of other non-FRN Spyderco's so I'm trying to figure out what I should expect with FRN. Half of the knives I keep out for EDC are G10 or CF Spydercos.

Just got word via email its not going to be covered. I'll probably try to mold it back into place or just carry it lefty.
