Hey I was wondering I really want to get a Alsdorf custom with some nice mother of pearl or abalone! However if I spend the cash I want too show it off so would it be considered a sin to carry one of those as a edc?

No, the Sin would be not to put it in your pocket. It's a "pocket knife", not a "display knife"

Most makers are builing the knife,no matter how "pretty",to be used
Some people,& me, see even more beauty in "pocket aged",pocket knives
Mike Alsdorf knives are nice to carry & use, they cut good, too

I'd carry it. If it's made as a fuctional tool, it's kind of a shame not to use it once in a while. Use, but don't abuse, and any tool will not be the worse for it. Maybe if I was really worried about the scales, I'd use a pocket sheath to protec t it. But it would make a fine Sunday knife.

Use it.

Carry it and don't look back.
The first few scratches on the bolsters will be painful to see but soon enough it will take on a nice broken-in look and utilizing it will be easier. That's not to say I'd carry a fistful of change or your keys in the same pants pocket with it.

I'll offer you three answers, any two of which you are free to accept:

  • Mike puts a great polished working edge on his knives. The knives carry well, and he ships them with very handy little slip cases so the knives won't waggle around too much in your pocket or fight with your keys. Every time you use your knife you'll have the chance to pull it out and enjoy its craftsmanship.
  • After you get your sweet little MOP knife, take your time fondling it and taking in its beauty. Let me know when you're done and I'll send you my mailing address so you can get it out here into my pocket. I'll do all the hard work for ya!
  • Buy two (or more). One for using and one to fondle in its freshness. Don't blame me if you end up using both at some point.

If I don't carry one of my custom slip joints, it usually means I don't like it enough to carry it.

I've got a Alsdorf mammoth ivory doctors knife that has been in my pocket and used (not abused), everyday since I got it. I will admit to keeping it in a small pouch, to fend off the dings of pocket carry.

Use it and enjoy the thrill of carrying and using a finely made tool.

It's your knife, do with it as you see fit. I personally don't enjoy safe queens as much as using knives, so most of my knives find their way into my pocket.

I have a 2-blade Teardrop Jack in CPM 154 (my favorite stainless steel) from Mike. I carry it in the slipcase that he provided with the knife. I carry it several times a month, and have used it enough to have to sharpen the main blade. While it has no "deep" scratches, it certainly will not pass for LNIB.
The next knife I get from him will definitely be a satin finish. It is a bit of a shame to disrupt that perfectly polished finish, but IMHO a much bigger shame to just look at it rather than enjoy using it.

I'll be honest, safe queens irk the hell out of me, especially customs.

the maker put one heck of a lot of time, effort, and love into making it as best as it could be, for the task it was designed for; being a pocket knife. A pocket knife is a tool, and tools are made to be used. Use it. :)

I think like that also. Why by a so expensive and welldone tool if its not to be used. Probobly there are slopjoints imporant to the future like Da Vincis Mona Lisa or Picassos Guernica like Scagel or Lincolns carryknife the night he got shot, but in general use your tools with some sense.
