Would this crack give you pause.

Looking for advice on this one. The crack in the bone goes from front pin to back pin. Keeping in mind that the shield is pinned also, would this crack prevent you from buying the knife? It will see use, not a safe.
There's another similar one available but the bone is much less interesting on both sides.

Cracks in Primitive Bone scales are very common.
In fact, you're gonna be lucky to find one without any cracks.

Having said that, I would look around some more.
Yes, that crack would give me pause.

Shoot them an email. Maybe it's stabilized.

I believe Northfield's primitive bone is stabilized but I don't know what that entails and it's clear to me that the crack formed after the pins were installed due to it's path from pin to pin.

My understanding is that the primitive bone is stabilized, so I doubt if the crack would spread.
I would take a chance on it because it has a lot of character-- that's what makes the primitive bone special.

It wouldn't bother me too much, but I keep clear epoxy on hand. I don't think I'd be willing to pay full price, though. Pin to edge cracks are one thing, but that looks to run the entire length of the scale.

I'd pass on that knife.

I don't mind a few hairline cracks in stag or bone, it's the nature of the beast. But if I see a crack from a pin all the way back to the rear of the scale, I'm not touching it, no matter how they discount it. And I really don't like the way the crack bisects the pin hole.

That's about 10 to 1 against. I think you guys confirmed my fears. Thanks for the input. I actually missed out on the one I really wanted but just can't bring myself to buy this one.

Full price??? IMO that's a bit much. I would pass. Again IMO, they are getting away with murder.

Regards

Robin

If the crack occured during or after pinning (which it surely seems to have), it doesn't matter if the bone were stabilized or not. That process is done before the handles are attached. Usually the handles are cut oversize to allow some wiggle room, and I'd imagine the guy dropping them in would have adjusted it to avoid bisecting a pin hole location if the crack were already there. I'd definitely avoid it.
